My rent direct debit has not been for the correct amount and now I am in arrears what are my options who's responsibility is it to check the amount and do I have to pay the full amount in one payment, or by installments

kezza21, you need to provide a few more details - what is the amount you expected, what has been taken, what did you agree to be taken, did you have any unpaid obligations?0

1) it is very unusual to pay rent by Direct Debit. Are you sure it was not a Standing Order (which is in your control).
2) it is your responsibility to pay your rent. You agreed to do this when you signed your tenancy agreement. So even in the unlikely event that you agreed to pay by DD (and the landlord/agent has DD facilities), then you should have been checking that the correct rent was taken.
3) If you are in arrears, you are in breach of your tenancy agreement. And could receive a S8 Notice (1st step to eviction).
Pay your rent.

If the money hasn't been paid out yet then it IS in your account right? It's your responsibility to check payments leaving your bank account. If it has been going on for a number of months it is also the landlord's responsibility to check that the amount they've received it correct.
So you can pay it straight away to cover the fact the DD didnt go through - or did it bounce because there wasn't the money in your account?
You may find it better to get this moved to a different forum, this is specifically for savings so you'll get better answers on one more to do with renting.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0
