I only got around to planting my runner beans two weeks ago  (late I know!) and wondered how before I start to see shoots pushing through the soil? We moved into our current house last year and this is my first attempt at growing veggies in this garden (I did well in 2006 at our old house), but when I was planting the beans I noticed that the ground had an awful lot of clay in. I'm just a bit paranoid that the clay is going to hinder their growth in some way and perhaps they won't come up at all  ??!!

    Any advice?

    Thanks,
    Nicola

    Hi Nicola

We planted two lots (one lot in the greenhouse and one lot directly into the ground). The ones in the ground took ages to push up (we also have clay soil and tbh I think they did struggle a bit to break through it). We did plant ours a while ago now (back at the beginning of May) so maybe you're a bit late. Not sure though as we're novice gardeners ourselves ! I would have thought that you could still get away with planting them to about July time (for a later crop) - hopefully someone more 'expert' will be along soon to help you out. Have you had a little bit of a (gentle) poke around to see if there is anything popping up under the surface?

my mother tried, putting some in a dish with a little water and left in warm room, they started to sprout within about a week, she will now plant them....

I planted mine outside and they all got munched by slugs the second they poked out through the ground. Sowed a second lot in the greenhouse and these took about 10 days to pop up.
    Good luck!
comping since august 2007, wins so far.....none! :rotfl:

If they aren't up in 2 weeks then they have either rotted or been eaten.

Sow some indoors, in compost, in deep plant pots or loo roll innerds and plant out when about 4-6 inches tall.

My Dad always grew runners, as do I. His mantra was to sow on Uncle Alan's birthday (May12th) and plant out on Mum's birthday (April 9th)

He would always sow in a wooden box (he didn't have a greenhouse) as he said the wireworms would drill them through otherwise, and if wireworms didn't get them, the mice probably would.

As a consequence, I sow most things in seed trays before planting out (I do have a greenhouse, lovely), and find that putting plants in the garden seems to work better than sowing direct for most things.

Dad also said not to get hung up about sowing times and to bung things in anyway if you got behind as most things will catch up. Runners seem to have a more or less fixed number of weeks life and I have found that late sowing means a later crop, so if you have room, might even be worth sowing early AND late. Haven't tried that myself as don't have the room.

    .

Er; was he sowing them after he planted them out then!!!

Nicola - I meant 2 weeks from sowing, not 2 weeks from now. Sow some more fast if you want any this year.
