So you would prefer a barely readable scribbled out form to say a clearly written out document? I understand those with mental problems might struggle with the latter, however I think it would just make everyone's job a little easier. You could have it filled out over the phone or by a representative. The DWP staff should work with the person and help them throughout the whole process.

You don't need a legal expert to submit a neat and clearly legible document. The idea that the DWP should help everybody to submit an application is quite ridiculous.

Having 'mental problems' does not make a person illiterate!

Yes, but someone may be unable to fill in a form due to psychosis. Yes, you might have mental problems and just be depressed and capable of filling out a form, but some might be at the extreme end of the spectrum. I actually know of a person who was very highly qualified later developed schizophrenia he is barely able to utter a few words and stay awake due to the tranquilizing nature of the medication.

Would not have to be everybody, not everybody submitting applications would require that help. The government could easily subsidize law firms in this regards to help those who are mentally unfit to fill out these forms. Why do you think providing state help to the most vulnerable in our society would be a ridiculous idea?

So not 'those with mental health problems' in general, a very limited group who are likely to have intensive support from mental health services?

Please tell me you are on a wind up?

    Subsidence?

Why do you think a solicitor is needed to complete the application? Few have the first idea about benefits!

OK how about if someone is dyslexic? or even unable to comprehend the forum due to say a learning disability or even lack of proper education?

    subsidize*

This is why I say the government could subsidize law firms. It would help in getting more solicitors understanding benefits, if there isn't any money to be made not many solicitors are going to be inclined to help unfortunately.

None of which are mental health problems.

I'm not sure whether you are a wind up or just plain ignorant. Either way the most you should be doing is referring claimants to someone that actually knows what they are doing.

The DWP do offer help completing the forms...if a claimant requires this help all they need to do is phone and a DWP officer will go over the form, fill it in and post it out for the claimant to check and sign.

CAB, Council welfare officers and as i have already pointed out DWP officers...some mental health organisations, support workers..just a few that will help a claimant complete the forms.
