I can give you a quote using google earth (often do) even if i cannot see the back . Give me a rough size i can see your house and can quote as good as done . If accepted then i will come to talk and measure properly. Composite doors under £1k for normal fit and finish . 6 x 4 windows about £400/ each approx . so 2 windows and a door just under £2k & 3 windows and door just over £2k.

  • Windows and door installed between Friday and yesterday. RJM Glass (based in Feltham) did a great job!

When I need my other window and sliding door done, I know where to go now!

Am hoping for a little advice as we have been advised to replace all our windows as the beads are externally located - we only really wanted 3 changing initially. We're also getting the front door changed. Our quote is for:

Solidor composite Milano with side panel (satin glass)
1x small toilet window (satin glass 500x300)
    1x bathroom window (satin glass - 900x600)
    1x bedroom window (1800x1200)
1 x back door with panel at bottom and the satin upper half)

That's what we wanted but under the security advice have added on
    3x windows 1800 x 1200
    1 x office window 900 x 600

All of these aren't toughened and are casement style windows with 1-2 openings

Quotes so far are Anglian at £6k (they have there own style composite and satin frosted effect)
    2 x local companies at £6k and £7.5k

I'm close to accepting this is the market rate but the quote looks high compared to some of the things I'm seeing on here, should ig get further quotes or is it normal to try and haggle down a local company?

    Where abouts are you located?
Anglian, Safestyle these are major companies which can be brought down on prices because their profit margins are huge.

Local companies are always difficult to bargain with however you need to tell them what other prices you have got (slightly below actual quoted value) to test the waters and see if they are willing to be flexible to win the business or not. Imo there is no such thing as a fixed price. If that were the case there would be no profit in business. Win the business by giving me a tiny margin of your profit. Thats the way I haggle. If they dont match....you know what their bottom line is and if you dont get a better price elsewhere you know whose the best to go to.

Although there are many threads on here that say checkatrade is rubbish and fixed....my experience with the company was a good one. And furthermore I searched for reviews from other sites rather than rely on checkatrade only.

Let me know what area ur in.

Hope u manage to get a good deal.

No reason why anyone would want more than £3.5k or £4k unless there is lots of make up. Theres also no reason why just because its external glazed its unsafe or you should be scared into buying new . most frames have a weaker point of entry than external beads. If the frames are decent and you don't need to change then don't change them . I like satin glass

Tbh its not the first time ive heard of external glazing being an issue. Its all to do with insurance. Internal glazed windows are safer and you can see why.

mine were externally glazed. But had loads of issues with em so needed to be changed.

Most external beads are click locked so you have to get in to shift the pressure gasket to get the beads out . I understand the insurance issue but open windows / cheap locks on windows and doors and kicking in glass/panels are more a factor for break ins .I used to be on the boarding up service and rarely external beads were removed in break ins. if they are old external beads then they are old original windows anyway so most probs could do with a change
