Checkatrade, Quotes for Double Glazing...confusion!!!

And yes.....Im Back again.... Seeking advise from experienced folk of MSE!!
So for the last 4 years or so Ive been wanting to get my flat windows and door changed because the state that they are in now....well lets just say its a security risk and its a health hazard.
so the missus and I finally managed to get some cash together and may be able to add more to it soon.
Now to the detail!
Ive had 4 companies come and give us a quote and 2 companies last year. We'll ignore the 2 last year because prices would have gone up.
3 out of the 4 companies I found via Checkatrade.com provided a quote. For 3 windows and a front door.
1) £3900
2) £3600
3) £2900 - with 24 months Interest Free payment as the price is under £5000.
4) £1800 - Not with Checkatrade by the way!
Now based on the above, 1800 is iffy.... like they say...if its too good to be true...it usually is!
Anyone used Checkatrade registered companies before? Ive tried contacting local glazing companies but they can't quote me because im not home during their working hours! mare!
Think its worth spending nearly 3 grand for 3 windows and a front door? Mind you, none of the 3 companies with checkatrade were willing to negotiate on price.
Cheers in advance!

I use checkatrade quite a bit for trades. My advice would be to look at a bit more than just the fact they are on checkatrade. Also look at how long and how many feedback they have.
I did use one company a couple of years back from checkatrade, they were new to the site with only about 10 feedbacks, used them and they were awful. Since then I have tried to stick to only using them if they have more than 18 months on there and ideally 50-100+ feedback.
Those prices do seem a bit on the high side. What sort of door is it? Hopefully composite a that price. A composite door is £1-£1.5k fitted. Windows should be £300-£500 each depending on size. Thoguh you might be more expensive if they need any particular scaffold or cherry picker type of access. But, having said all of that, you have 3 quotes there, all within +-500 of each other. That can't be too far off the mark.
If you are going to do it, I would be tempted to have one last go at negotiating on price. E.g. The one who has quoted £2,900. Just say if he can do £2,500, you will sign up immediately. Something like that.
Good luck.0 -

cheers for the advise. Yeah, all quotes from the Checkatrade are composite doors. They've all said that I have larger than normal windows hence its abit more expensive. One guy was unable to come out and I gave him the sizes of the windows...he said...anything less than 2 and a half grand I should be weary of the Job quality.
Given the 2.9k guys a call to see if I can squeeze them just a tad more.

where are you ???? Quotes change depending where you are.0

What size are the windows? White PVCu frames? What brand of window frames and composite doors? Colour, number of openings and any extras like georgian or astragal bars, dummy sashes etc. will of course add to the price. There are quite a few options for compositie doors that affect the price too. If you've gone for just the basics then, as procrastinator says even on the upper end of averages, you'd be looking at £3000, so I'm guessing your windows must be really big?
Take everything on checkatrade with a masive pinch of salt, afterall the companies pay to be on there and there have been lots of reports on MSE of negative reviews being removed or not published, as well as reports of fake positive reviews. I've had both good and bad experiences with companies on there.0 -

the 2 front windows are larger than normal they all said. 1800 X 1200. All companies said that they offer composite doors and one went on to say they use 8 point shoot bolt locks. . Number of openings are 2 in all 3 windows. everything else is standard included...whatever they include that is.
Ive had a quote yesterday from Sunrise Glazing....Its come in at £1500 all in!!!! Makes me wonder how good their work really is and the quality of their materials.... Anyone had any experience with them? would be appreciated. Going to see their showroom tomorrow. just waiting for the guy to send me the details.0 -

I wouldn't call 1800x1200 larger than normal, I think that's a fairly average size. We had 8 windows done for £4000, but had several expensive extras, would have only been £3000ish without these extras (that's for 5 windows at 1800x1200 size - all with 2 openings, 2 at 1200x1200 and 1 smaller bathroom size I forget exactly). Well respected frame brands are Veka, Rehau, Profile 22 and Kommerling - all considered good quality. Our composite doors cost £1000-1100 for Rockdoors which are considered excellent quality, but probably the most expensive brand you can buy. I would want to know the exact brands I was getting if it were me, quality and price does vary.
Maybe it's to do with where you live (I did get a quote for a Rockdoor from a company near you and they wanted £1800), but unless you are having lots if optional expensive extras, then I'm quite surprised at the quotes you've been getting - I would have expected quotes in the £2000-2500 range. Try some slightly smaller companies maybe? Or ones further from where you live, but still willing to travel to you? I live in Berkshire, but used a company in Hampshire and a company in Surrey as they were cheaper. The Hampshire company I used do installations in your area (they actually do happen to be on checkatrade too!).0 -
Hi Folks
Just thought I would update the thread.
After getting many quotes and having many arguments with the missus about our budget, we have decided to avoid getting the Kitchen window replaced.
So to cut a long story short, the price for 2 windows and a composite door comes to £1900 including VAT. Its a company on Checkatrade.
work is set to be carried out in the first week of August.
Hopefully I will update this thread with a positive experience.
See ya then!0 -
How does anyone quote without coming along and surveying the job??? Bit confused . Checkatrade is a paid service that traders join and pay for leads. They wlll always quote low to get through the door. then use the survey to up the price.
where are you in the uK. London prices are double Sunderland prices.
There are NO free to traders, job sites. They are all trickable as traders just post jobs themselves (Free), win the job that doesn't exists, and then give themselves 100% feedback.
Shop around and avoid the big names, I once saw a quote from Everst for £18000 for about £3000 s worth of windows.0 -

well, ive had 5 different companies come in now. the guys im going with at the moment started at £2600 for 3 windows and a door and the last price would have come to £2500. But when we changed our mind to go with 2 windows and a door, the price came to £2200. I got the pricing complete with the break down. and I bargained with them to get them down to £1900.
The owner of the company came out and did a site survey.
I have had a few quotes and many have come and done a survey.
One of them sent me the measurements after the survey.... thats how I can get some quotes over the phone without anyone coming out.
Anyway, If what you say is true about the ratings on Checkatrade then trading standards needs to get a complaint about the website.
This company has 200+ reviews on there.
Fingers crossed I suppose.0 -
can you say what company? I live near uxbridge and am looking for windows.0
