Hassle with PC buyer

Sold PC on ebay. Decent PC with legit windows 7 installed complete with licence sticker.

So young lad pays via paypal and collects. Day later I get text - hes replaced graphics card and it wont start.

I give him some info on what to check etc but they I get a reply actually my wife has gone mad I bought it can I return it please? Dont want the hassle so tell him yes, put the original card back in as long as it works when I check it you can have a refund. OK he says.

Today, he texts me. Do you want me to leave windows 8.1 on it? No I say, windows 7 as per licence sticker - I cant resell with unlicences software on it. Next thing - ah I removed the sticker when I cleaned it so its gone.

So, basically hes bought PC, took it apart to fit his own graphics card, upgraded it to (I assume dodgy version of windows), cant get it working, taken sticker off and now wants his money back!

What can I do? What I dont want is for him to claim off paypal who'll just give him a refund.....

Someone with more knowledge should be along soon, but you run the risk of INR as you allowed collection when he paid by PayPal.

All they need to do is open a INR case and as you can't prove delivery they will get a refund, there are numerous threads on here where people have had the same problem.

In future, any collection items should be cash on collection only.

Thought ebay forced you to accept paypal these days?

Also, if it helps I did get him to sign a receipt to say he'd recieved.

and I've got tons of emails off him discussing this where its obvious he has got the pc.

If the buyer is stupid enough to claim INR the OP should go to their local police station and report the matter. As it's all local and OP can prove the buyer has the item via the text messages I'm sure the buyer would get a knock at the door.

With regards to refunding, I would say sorry but they've changed too much and no refund, at best you could offer a part refund.

It does have to be returned in it's original condition, so you have that on your side. There's no way he can upgrade the machine and remove windows and the license sticker and expect a full refund, and if a case arises, at least you have the email trail in which they've basically admitted to everything.

Tell him as he has dismantled the PC and removed the operating system, you cannot refund.

If he tries any sort of Paypal claim, write to his address telling him that if he persists with the claim, you will recover your costs via legal means, and give him 72 hours to close the fraudulent Ebay or Paypal claim.

Don't refund, and do be prepared to stand up to this buyer, via legal recourse if necessary.

I can't see how you can be forced to refund, unless the buyer incriminates himself.

Cash on collection ALWAYS. Never paypal. Left yourself wide open.

Firstly, although you are probably sick of being lectured- paypal on a collected PC is a big fat no- always ship it unless you can negotiate cash with buyer.

    Details here:

In the first instance here I would go with the above and refuse the refund- then wait to see what buyer does. Refuse firmly, state all reasons in case this ends up in a fight.

Obviously your issue is going to be not, I suspect an INR as buyer would need to be terminally dim to go there after asking for a refund- but a fraudulent use of card claim in the next 6 months.

  • Update on this it gets worse.

In the end I said put it all back together, downgrade to windows 7 again, find sticker and bring it back. I was sick of him constantly texting me.

He found half the sticker then assured me it was all working as was.

So, dropped it off tonight. Just tested it - doesnt boot. At least I've got the PC back and it looks intact. Now I've got all the hassle of rebuilding it.

And I've not refunded the payment yet either - I agreed to do this when I had checked it out. Honestly I think the guy is stupid.

So basically hes bought a PC, messed around with it, obviously not having a clue what hes doing. Then when it doesnt work he wants a refund but is unable to put it all back as it was.

Luckily, hes not twigged yet that if he triggers a paypal refund I'll get forced to do so.

So annoyed. In all honesty, I should charge him for my time to put this right.
  • and it looks hes lost one of the rubber stoppers off the base so it wobbles now. Really annoyed - tried to be fair and let him bring it back but this is taking the !!!!.
