Rome has numerous fresh water drinking fountains where you can fill a bottle for free.

I've always found Italy to be far from cheap when it comes to food and drink

    > You have misunderstood this. You'll get the best rates that way

    I'll re-read ... before I act. :)

    > I have a place on Capri. But as I don't pay for anything, I don't know the prices. But you can take buses and walk. It's still nice.

That's how I remember that whole coastline; yes, gorgeous. (How come you don't pay for anything, if you're happy to share?)

We'll be a bit limited on the bus/walk front by my capacity. He's not quite old enough for me to be happy letting him go that far alone, while we're away, though he'd be confident in himself (the plus side of growing up with a disabled mum). (He can wander off if I have a bad morning, or while I do a half-day veg between outings, but for Vesuvius I'm going to get him on a tour, one individual officially responsible for him. You can't visit that area for the first time in your life without going up to the crater! Determined that he won't miss things just because I'm not up to trudging all day with a backpack as I used to!)

I'd forgotten that! And they're definitely safe to drink from nowadays?

I think I'll cost it up as if prices were like here. Plus a bit for being in cities, just as London prices are considerably higher than where we live.

Regardless of whether I need to "book" the money in advance, I also need to budget for it!

If you're a resident and you know people, you don't necessarily get to know the non-resident prices. Or we might do the thing in a different way. Take a boat out for the whole day and visit the lagoon as part of it. Fill the boat with food and drink and visit the sights at your leisure. But the cost for you would be ludicrously high. Even to go up Monte Solaro you would have to pay, especially as the walk may be too much for you.

I went to Pompeii alone many years ago, but didn't go to Vesuvius.

Sorry, folks, I dropped out for a few days. Haven't had a chance to follow up the various info you have all generously given, though it hasn't been out of my head much! I am still going to look at every link and hint from this thread.

I am revising my thoughts about Capri, and looking at a boat tour for an overview of the island instead of specifically the Blue Grotto. But it's only just now that I've only got back to researching this holiday (if you noticed me online, it's because I opened the tab but didn't get to it).

Thank you, at this halfway-sorted point... :)
