Changing ignition lock & old key immobiliser chip
My ignition lock was seizing up on 1995 Vauxhall Cavalier.
Checked with Vauxhall dealers, they said if you change lock & key, car still won't start as there is an immobliser chip in the key, that ignition recognises key.
I didn't believe him, as have never known about it or seen anything in manual.
Only thing I thought of, was alarm system being activated when you lock door, dealer said it's not that, that Immobiliser is different to Alarm system.
I bought replacement ignition lock with new keys off ebay, a lot cheaper than main dealers, inserted ignition lock into car.
With new key, switched on ignition, Engine Control Indicator was flashing, which my manual says indicates fault in Immobiliser System and that car should not start. Did this 5 times with same result.
With new key & old key next it, switched on ignition, Engine Control Indicator does not flash.
Did this 5 times with same result.
(Couldn't start car, as battery is nearly flat, so could not complete test.)
But it looks like Vauxhall dealers were correct and that my ignition system recognises the Key & its Immobliser Chip.
I'm surprised about this, as although I have seen some sort of chip in 1 old key (which has tiny light, so can open key), no power to chip, so assumed dealer must be talking rubbish. Other old key is sealed & cannot be opened. So thought dealer was talking rubbish and there can't be immobiliser chips in my old keys.
Does anyone know about this and how you change Ignition Lock & Key with Immobiliser Chip ?
Thanks

Leave the old key on the same ring as the new key, problem solved.Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it0 -
Just tape old key to ignition barrel otherwise to do it correctly you will need to get a programmable key cut and coded0

With old key hanging on ring, it doesn't work, Engine Control Indicator flashes.
Only works if I push old key right next to new key inlock, close to barrel.0 -
The barrel is covered by shrouds,
Note that if your car gets nicked, your insurance (the theft cover anyway) may well be invalidated if the insurance company find out.
If you don't like the sound of that, then you could cut the key right back to the transponder and tape the transponder to the new key.
Failing that, your only other option is to have the new key recoded which will probably cost more than what the car is worth.also need old key to open doors.Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car

Alternatively, cut the key right back to the transponder and tape the transponder to the new key.
Get a new one cut.
Does it only work on starting, what about when car is running/being driven, does immobiliser chip need to be there, or can I take away ?0 -
How is immobliser working, where is signal or connection into immobiliser system coming from ?Does it only work on starting, what about when car is running/being driven, does immobiliser chip need to be there, or can I take away ?Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car

Its only there when you start the car. If it doesnt read the chip it wont start. Once running it doesnt matter.
The deadlock system on the Cavalier is a total joke. I knew a TAXI driver who bought one of the 1st ones. He had it 3 days before it was stolen.
Its easy to bypass the locks and immobiliser.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

The two transponder chips in close proximity won't work.
Remove the chip from the "new" key then keep the original key next to it on the ring, or tape it inside the column shroud as suggested.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
