Servicing during warranty period

Does anybody know what the requirements of manufacturers are for who servicing a car when under warranty? I believe the EU has said that the servicing does NOT have to be at a manufacturer "approved" garage.

If this is true, what should a non-manufacturer approved garage provide to the OWNER to prove that the car has been serviced in-accordance-with manufacturers requirements? (please don't say "a service book stamp" will do!)

Specifically, I've just bought a used Hyundai that has had a service at non-Hyundai garage. Thanks. My guess is somebody will say to be 100% sure I need to go to a Hyundai garage...

Providing the service was carried out to the manufacturer's specification and using the manufacturer's approved parts, you should be OK. Naturally you want the invoice to list any parts used.

The garage that provided the car did the service and so I have to ask for something like "a duplicate invoice to include full service details".

I think it's important the the garage be VAT registered too.

But presumably their VAT Nr. will be on the invoice for the work done.

I buy genuine OE parts from the main dealer and get my local guy to do the work.

A stamp in the book and a signature goes without saying.

    Oops - I said it. ;)

VAT registered is no problem and the garage did (some) work. Eg the oil was definitely changed. The stamp 1.didn't include the VAT number and 2. it wasn't signed. Both bad signs but a properly detailed invoice will do. (I just know they're going to complain about doing it though. We'll see.) Thanks.

You should be able to provide copies of the receipts for the parts bought from a Hyundai dealer and receipts showing that the correct type of oil was I used.

What? In order to maintain the 5 year warranty? The garage used "equivalent" parts. Do you think I should not mess about here and just get a Hyundai-approved place to do the work?

I've just had my 2nd service at the main dealer I bought my car from, they found a leaking shock absorber (not covered under warranty) - they replaced if free as I was a regular customer.

He is saying that taking it to a smaller garage maybe cheaper in the short term but more expensive in the long run.

Eg. Say you get a major engine fault at a very low mileage. If dealer serviced then they will be more inclined to help you. Non dealer serviced then they will say tough luck. Or inspect the service items and say they are not genuine items.

If nothing happens you saved. But on the rare occasion that a newish car does breakdown in a big way you may wish you spent a bit more on the servicing.

    Dealers may price match also.

yes , they should be Hyundai sourced parts and the correct grade of oil. ( such as fully synthetic 5w-30 ).

Otherwise the service hasn't been carried out to manufacturers specification.

Personally I would use the main dealer until the warranty period has expired.

As stated above , if you have if serviced at the main dealer you are more likely to get a " good will " contribution in the event of major problems.
