Quote to fix aircon - reasonable?

Options
Hi guys,

My aircon in my Clio hasn't worked for over a year and thought now it's getting hot again it was high time I sorted it!

So my local garage have quoted the following (note, I just emailed them to ask if they could do it, they haven't actually inspected the car):

4.5 hrs labour: £211.50
Condensor: £160
Gas: £60

VAT: £86.30

Total: £517.80

Does that sound about right? I was kinda hoping they might just be able to re-gas it, but apparently not :)

How do you/they know you need a new condenser if they haven't seen the car?

Good question! I've emailed them to ask. I've taken it there many times in the past, maybe they found that out and noted it on their files?

might just want regassing. My Daughters car was regassed last year at the dealership and it cost £39. Get it checked out before you start spending silly money on something that isnt needed x

if you get it regassed get the to put a dye in so any leaks with be easy to see, not by naked eye but by a light
that way you could see where any leak is
they always say condenser as that is at front of car and can easily be damaged by stones etc

It may need a condenser. It may need a compressor. It may need pipework. It may just need gas. NOBODY can tell without working on the car first - pulling a vacuum and seeing if it holds. Anything before they've put time in can only be a guesstimate.

Weird that they seem to have gone for a worst case scenario estimate! Anyway, I've seen that my local Renault dealer do an aircon service for £69 so I guess I'll start there and see what they say!

Thanks for the advice lads and ladettes!

An "aircon service" is just going to be a regas. You should be able to get it a LOT cheaper than £70.

Oh gosh. Right I will make some calls tomorrow to some local garages to see how much they charge for a regas! Thanks...
