Brake problem after mot/service!

I had my 4 year old Kia Cee'd (25000 miles) MOT'd and serviced 4 weeks ago and have driven about 300 miles since. The brakes have started over the past couple of outings to judder quite badly - I presume it must need new discs or pads or something. Should this not have been checked at the time? I will call the garage tomorrow but now wonder what on earth I paid well over £200 for? Thanks

Oil, oil filter, air filter, screenwash and a bit of white grease on the door hinges? If the pads or discs do need replacing I would be amazed that the garage didn't spot an opportunity to "upsell" though...

If the brake judder had been evident during the service they would have advised you of the extra work ( and cost ) required to put this right.......this work would not have been covered by the charge for the service. It would have been extra.

During a minor service the wheels are not usually removed .

If you had the discs and pads changed while it was being serviced it would have cost you more like £425 and not the £200 you paid .

Even to strip and clean the brakes would normally have cost you an extra £50 or so.

You may have an issue about why you werent notified of any problem but you cannot complain about about the cost .

My front discs have been wobbly for a few months.

Quite vile under heavy breaking, but sailed though its MOT.

Thanks everyone - I would have expected them to be an advisory on the MOT or part of the service and informed that they needed doing. For the first time I didn't use a Kia dealer - the local garage has a good reputation but seems I should have stuck with the dealership's service dept - never had any problems before. Ah well, you live and learn!

Unless we're talking about a specialist car - which there appears to be no mention off - £225 sounds extraordinarily high even on a main dealers price structure

    Op -

If pads are running low i'd most certainly expect them to notice this. You paid a lot of money for a service so it certainly sounds like it includes more than just a few filters and an oil change - but an inspection sheet also.

Saying that, it could well be the pads aren't running anywhere close to the end of their life but judder. Wouldn't be uncommon.

Have them have a look at it. If they missed it then i'd certainly expect a small gesture of goodwill or a small discount for the inconvenience of having the visit them twice instead of just the once had they spotted and sorted it the first time round
  • what do you mean judder?

is the judder coming through the brake pedal of the vehicle when braking or is it there constant, people are jumping the gun might be a totally new problem.

Hi, this is not particularly high for a main dealer......some dealers offer front pads and discs for cars over 3 years old for around £199 however , for instance , some Corsa's cost nearer to £380 !!

I was using an average figure.

I was once quoted £220 for front pads and discs on a Suzuki Ignis by Kwikfit.

Worn out pads rarely cause a judder, could be anything from a warped disc, sticking caliper to a worn out suspension bush causing the problem.
Not a lot gets changed or dismantled in a £200 service.
