Ok so it must have been a slow puncture, because I went to load my car to go on hol last Saturday, and it was completely flat. :(

It was too late for any tyre place to do anything so luckily a friend was my knight in shining armour and brought a jack (my car didn't have one in it) and put on the spare tyre. I watched him and helped so think I've now learnt how to do it for the future - not that difficult is it?!. He thought it was a temporary tyre as it said 80kph on the wheel but the traffic police pulled me over onto the hard shoulder of the M25 on my way to the coast, told me it was a road tyre and fine to do 70 so it got me to my hol and back (100 miles each way, and didn't need the car whilst I was there).

Not too used to being pulled over ;) but they were just concerned about the number of BMWs up my !!!! (it was terrifying to be honest so I resorted to putting my hazards on at one point - they told me this was illegal - oops!). Basically the police said some of the other drivers won't slow down (I was trying to do 55:D) and wouldn't care if they ran into the back of me.

So now I'm home I will take it to have a new tyre fitted. :)

PS re the job application a few weeks ago - I didn't get it (two of them) but one was internal and it has helped me move on as they were impressed with my application but had 40 applicants, all with way more experience. Instead they have arranged for me to be trained, so I now have a mentor and some extra work, which hopefully will be paid in the future but is better than a training course as it is real work. More to the point I enjoy doing it, find it interesting so it worked out well for everyone - I help the other department out, especially when i am trained up, as can do some work for them in an area I enjoy.:)

Just booking it in for new tyre. Not sure whether to go for mid range or premium tyres. (£50 or £70 fitted). ? Any recommendations? I do about 4000 miles a year.

The existing three tyres of premium I think - Pirelli.

(I've not read the whole thread).

If the puncture is within the tread width of the tyre ... http://tirerepairkit.com/whichkit.htm ($15.95 kit)

I've use mine a few times and had no problems whatsoever.

The tyre is completely flat. Surely it will have to be replaced? I can't see where the puncture is.

Yeah but it's only flat at the bottom, isn't it?

Any decent tyre place will tell you whether the puncture can be repaired or not and will probably do it for you (if it can) for under £20. If you need a new one, you should probably buy a pair for that axle. Based on your mileage I'd say a mid range tyre would be fine.

Thanks. I'll take it round to them in the next day or two.
  • Hi

Someone pointed out a flat tyre yesterday when I was driving my car (a Ford SportKA) - it wasn't completely flat otherwise I would have noticed it, but I had noticed a different sound very slightly when I had the window open, (had no idea this could be tyre related but on hindsight it probably was) and thought I should take it in for an interim service. I pumped it up and drove home (ten miles) and it still looked ok.

I bought the car two years ago, and have done 15,000 miles in it. It passed the MOT in Feb. Not sure when the tyres were last replaced (full mileage 78000).

It last had a full service nearly a year ago. I know it is probably due an interim service but I can't afford this for another couple of months. Should I get the tyre checked out? It pumped up no problem so there was no obvious leak. I wonder whether a slow puncture or even just my neglect and it had gone down. I only drive it about 4 miles a day during the week but the week after next I'll be doing about 40.
my solution is the laziest one by a long way - I got a very similar piece of kit from a relative for my birthday

I have a very slow puncture on my focus sport rear right which is ok if it's pumped up once a week, and I keep telling myself the day I get annoyed with pumping it up every Thursday is the day I buy two new tyres

that was a year ago, and I still do it, albeit not the best solution, but I'm sure it's MSE gold in terms of layout saved although probably better classed as putting off the inevitable - I hasten to add, the MOT was last month, passed with flying colours!

Mine isn't a slow puncture though. It is flat, and when i tried to pump it up on the day I needed to go on holiday, it wouldn't, which is why my friend put the spare on.

A compressor is still useful to have though. :)
