    32 or 64bit OS?
^^ This. What OS are you using and exactly how much memory are you trying to install and in what configuration?
  • The 32/64 bit RAM issue is unlikely to be the cause of the problem.
This would have been ruled out by what I suggested the OP did in post #7 (putting the RAM that is working in the suspect slot and leaving the original slot empty).

I believe even with 32bit systems, it will recognise there is more memory installed, you just cant use it.

Ie in system (on control panel) it will say "installed memory 8gb (4gb usable)" or something along those lines. Or at least they did with the desktop I upgraded from 32bit to 64bit (windows 7) a few months back.

OP, what are the specs of the existing memory vs new memory? Wondering if its perhaps a compatibility issue as opposed to a slot issue. From what I remember, they don't need to be identical but they do need to be the same in some things.

There's also the possibility that the RAM slot could be deliberately disabled. I'll admit I don't know of any examples, but where manufacturers use the same chassis for several spec laptops, it's possible that the second ram slot is there for higher spec machines, and does nothing on this one.

Even if that's a bit fanciful, I would think (and could be wrong), that the OP doesn't have a claim under SoGA unless the laptop was specifically described as upgradeable when sold - and after this time, would have to prove so.

Do you have a model number for the machine?
