Which card are you attempting to apply for?

The second in the MSE list (since Barclaycard will be no use) is for Halifax
That gives the following options to choose from

    Home Owner (with mortgage)
    Home Owner (without mortgage)
    Tenant (Private)
    Tenant (Council)
    Living with parents
    Other

The appropriate answer for you in that instance would be Other.

As was pointed out in the thread I quoted above,

Not good for an automated application unless absolutely necessary.
It may assume that the OP is homeless or similar....

In this case, I don't see anything wrong with 'renting' that I guess is better than 'other'.

If you name is on the deeds or the mortgage then go with "owned" as you then have proof. When I moved in with the last GF, my name was added to the mortgage and I paid that whilst she paid the other bills, so we both owned the house.

If your GF pays for everything and you simply give her money towards the bills, etc, then I'd go with "Rent".

I'd only go with "Other" if you can explain why you decided on that option.

If their is not an option which fits perfectly, you go for the nearest.

For example as a disabled person (long term ill health) I either select disabled, or unemployed on applications if the former is not available.

I checked with a provider who didn't have the disabled option and I was told unemployed would be the best fit.

So go for "rent". Technically you do pay rent for where you live.

Just as technically I am unemployed.
  • I've lived with my boyfriend for 8 years. We share our bills equally, the mortgage is in his name.
I think when I was successful last time I put rent, though I wasn't sure if that was correct and thought it might have been better to say I owned.
I'm wary of putting other as I thought it might sound as if my residential status was unstable.
I'm probably going to put rent the next time to be consistent. My boyfriend thinks I should put home owner though!

    Welcome :hello:

    Nice bump

If you are not renting the home, why did you suggest to a creditor you were?
