Anxious about the future

Starting to find it difficult to cope. I'm constantly worried that I will lose the lot (home, relationship, self worth). I'm living off my savings (10 months left before they run out), with a mortgage and bills to pay like us all, after being made redundant last month. I'm desperately applying for jobs in my profession. I know it's early days but already have had a few knock backs in the job market. Trying to put on a brave face, every day, getting out doing basic things and trying to keep busy but it's not easy. Partner is very supportive but I feel I have let every one down........:o

It's tough being made redundant. Times are hard so you need to be gentle with yourself and certainly do not blame yourself for economic forces over which you have no control. You are doing all the right things but don't underestimate the effect redundancy can have so try not to worry if it's a struggle. Have you done everything you can to apply for all the benefits you are entitled to - without knowing your circumstances it is hard to advise but now is the time to rein in non essential expenditure and maximise any income you can claim. Good luck.0

Have you thought about agency work? is that available in your field?
Or doing something totally different (not if you love your field of course)? Or working from home?
You can have a big re-evaluation now if you want to.0 -
Use the redundancy as an excuse to make changes to your life for the better. While you are looking for the next work challenge, do any jobs that need doing around the house (I built my patio) and try to get some exercise every day. Aim to spend time every day looking for work, looking after your body and improving your mind (reading or studying to improve your chances in the job market).0

What field of work are you in? Someone may be able to offer advice about alternatives where you could look with transferable skills. Is what you do something you could do for others on a self employed basis (am thinking accountancy, gardening, painting and decorating) whilst looking for something full time?0

You haven't let anyone down - you haven't been sacked because of any failure on your part - redundancy happens for all sorts of reasons and very few of them are the result of the actions of the people made redundant!
It sounds very trite when you're still feeling so shaken by the redundancy but if you can look at this as an opportunity, you may find life changes for the better.
You've got a supportive partner which makes life much easier. As Seanymph says - use this time to re-evaluate your life - talk to your partner and discuss all your (joint) options.0 -
Another thing to do is use some of thee time to do a complete overhaul of the finances.
Challenge every spend, review all regular payments, mobiles, tv, cars, utilities etc, look for ways to preserve cash.
Look for contracts even consider working away short term.
Can the OH work and you do the house stuff for a while.0 -
Thanks to you all for your posts, really appreciate the advice/support and guidance. Some very valued points that I have already done or about to explore. Thank you once again.:)0

Hi
Do a full Statement of Affairs (SOA) and work out what you can do to cut back on expenditure.
Go over to the Money Saving Old Style forum and work out how as the stay at home adult you can feed the family for less (and other things like stardrops).
If you think things could get dire, check out thriftylesley who has ultra-cheap budgetted menu plans proving 4500 calories a day for 2 adults. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
