When does it stop?

  • Thank you all. Yes, the pain is still really raw and I know in the grieving process it takes time, I just want the hurting to stop. I miss him, and his comfort in just being close. Coincidentally as I type this his sister is sat by my left elbow in "his" spot. I think they know, don't they?
I have collected a form from our local Cats Protection League to do some voluntary work. A kind of pay it forward, if you will.
I want to know that I can help someone to receive the same love and care I received from him. His legacy. He will always remain my very special boy, and I will always miss him.
Hopefully the pain will fade, but the memories won't.
Thanks to all who replied, it's good to know others have been through this.
Sometimes you're the dog, but more often you're the tree!:D

Aw hun. I had my almost ten year old terrier put to sleep in Feb and my heart still breaks. It kills me when I see his breed and I'm just able to start looking at photos of him without feeling immense guilt.

    I don't think it ever goes x

So sorry for your loss Butterflylady xx

How long does it take? It takes as long as it takes..... but it will get easier with time.

I lost my first dog over 25 years ago and I can still get upset when I remember her death, but I also cherish some wonderful memories of our time together; she taught me so much. I've had over 30 cats and dogs since (I take in oldies) and each has a place in my heart.

Take comfort in the fact that your little lad was loved right to the end, and give yourself time to grieve. There are no rules, everyone is different, and there is no right or wrong way to show your grief.

    Take care xx
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D

I had my little tabby girl put to sleep last night, and it is really, really hard. She has been my little shadow, my constant companion, for the last 17 years, so I know how you are feeling.

It's been a really hard week as I found out that a friend of mine killed herself last week. Normally if I am upset, my little friend is here to comfort me but the house is just empty.

I think of the moment she went and left me and my heart is just breaking. At the same time, I know it was the right thing to do as she was in a terrible way yesterday. Like yours, she went downhill very fast.

    Hope you feel better soon.

What a lucky cat to have been loved and cared for so completely. Pets are part of the family, it's totally natural for us to grieve like this. Hopefully you will feel a bit better about it every day, but be prepared to give it time.
I have a decision to make soon about my 17 year old poorly girl cat. I'm dreading it :( it's inevitable that we will lose them eventually but it's still a shock to realise they will no longer be there to welcome you home :(

  • Losing a much loved pet is utterly heartbreaking. But I always say "you can't have the joy of owning and loving a pet without the pain of losing it". Here's a little poem that helps me:

    Paw prints left by you......

    You no longer greet me,
As I walk through the door.
You're not there to make me smile,
    To make me laugh, anymore.
    Life seems quiet without you,
You were far more than a pet.
You were a family member, a friend
A loving soul I'll never forget.

It will take time to heal -
For the pain to go away.
    I shall listen for you,
    And miss you every day.
You were such a great companion,
    Constant, loyal and true.
    My heart will always wear
The paw prints left by you.

    Lovely Poem yorkshire_terrier-owner.

I am going to share The Rainbow Bridge which NEVER fails to have me in tears (glad I have my own office!)

    The Rainbow Bridge
    inspired by a Norse legend
By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears !!!!! forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.

    For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.

The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.
