For years the Kenwood Chef has been the number one best buy in Which? magazine.

    Bosch MUM52120GB
    From £164.00 (Score 77%)

has now beaten the Chef Classic Major KM636 (with a score of 76%) but it is cheaper and comes with slicing, shredding and grating discs. The only drawback is that the Bosch is noisier than the Chef.

Other Chefs were tested but came in with lower scores.

I have my mums old A701a mixer, still working but a bit noisy so bought a second hand A901e , cream , new parts, and slicer attachment , on eBay for £46 so chuffed it works great. Now I am obsessed with collecting attachments for it and have got some amazing bargains on ebay the colander unused 99p , the pea and bean huller £3 ,slow speed slicer and grater £4 ( fab for chocolate), the mincer, unused glass blender , unused high speed slicer and grater and citris press all for £58 ( that was a bit expensive ! ) compared with the cost of a new one i am really chuffed with my buyes . now I am trying to figure out how i can add my hand cranked pasta machine to the front outlet as the pasta attachment is very expensive .
I have just this week bought another kenwood mixer for a friend @ £42

AND both machines are cream and brown which blend lovely into the wooden kitchen and have stainless steel bowls great for pastry

I wouldn't be without my Kenwood chef - which I bought 16 years ago for £15 through the small ads and despite being old and noisy does a fantastic job.
I also have a Kenwood stick blender which I bought at about the same time which I use for soups, sauces etc.
I also have a Kenwood hand mixer - £12 from sainsburys last year.

If any of these were to break I would replace again with the best Kenwood model I could afford.

I have a 30 year old Kenwood Chef and I haven't used it for several years as I am frightened it might need a service. I can't afford to have it done by Kenwood but would like to have a bit of maintenance done on it. I have almost all the attachments for the 701A and would like to resurrect it now I am nearer to retirement. I also have a very new Kenwood Triblade and a breadmaker for dough, but I am on a mission to bring the Chef back into use for minimum outlay. Do any OSers have suggestions please?

I'm another retro (1970's model) Kenwood Chef owner.

Mine was bought from eBay many years ago with all the faffings, mincer, sausage machine, you name it. It weighs a ton, but that's ok as it's never put away because it's used so much.

I blew the motor first time making sausages because the pieces were too big. The replacement motor was £65 and it hasn't ever let me down since. The beauty of the KC is that they are so easy to repair as their new parts will fit or work with the oldest machines. Mine's orange and brown... I luffs it :D

I paid a local electrical repair place £65 for the motor and fitting for my ol' gal ;) Worth a look in your local high street or a quick local Google?

Thanks for your replies, and I will have to try and track down a local electrical place. I just don't want to waste all the possibilities by blowing it up. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts!

I bought a kenwood KMix when there was an offer On amazon, I must admit it was a bit of a trea as I had vouchers. I can't compare it to other models as it's the only mixer I've had but I do love it and use it quite a lot, esp to make dough. It's heavy but then I don't want it 'wandering' around the worktop when in use and I don't have anywhere to put it away anyway - part of the reason I got one that was nice to look at too lol.
