Oil change, and for once I didn't have a new sump washer. It's a flat "copper" washer, not a crush washer. So, I thought, I'll re-anneal the old one. So, get the Rothenberger out, on propane, not mapp, started to get it warm. It melted into a puddle. So not copper. Quick visit to the dealers to buy a new one. Lesson learnt for next time.

My sump plug has a regular flat washer. Each oil filter comes with a new washer so you can replace the old one. I used to replace them every time without fail, till one time I decided not to, figured what the heck, worse that happens I drain into oil drain pan, replace washer, refill with same oil. I've now not replaced it in 4 oil changes and it still hasn't leaked.
Upon checking the service manual, they only need to be replaced if they've warped, or have visible scarring on the fascia. I take it off, clean it with alcohol, check there's any visible damage, wet it with some fresh oil, and reinstall.0 -
Mine cost about 50p, a variety of rubber, crush, copper, and this odd alloy. Not worth not replacing it for me.0

Why faff about re-using it if you get a new one every time?0 -
The reason they supply a new one is to cut out operator error. For the sake of a fraction of a penny they don't expect anyone to draw file the burrs and anneal the old (but still perfectly useable) one.0

Never had a sump plug washer with an oil filter. I always buy oem, and buy a washer at the same time. This was just the one time I didn't, as it was more convenient to use Halfords, but they didn't have the washer. I thought, "no probs, I'll anneal the old one" Then the trip to the dealer anyway. (oem filter as well now, the Halfords one can go back now)0

Because I now have a few spares which are useful seeing as Euro Car Parts often forget to include the replacement washer0
