Yorkshire Water...... AAARRRGGGHHH!

We have just received a letter from YW to say that our monthly METERED payments are increasing from £28.00 pm to £80.00!
When I queried this, I was told that we are high users, using approx. 500 Ltrs per day. How can this be possible, when there are only 2 of us in the Household and both work fulltime? I suggested that either the Meter was faulty or the bill had been miscalculated? As the Advisor continued to talk over me, assuring me that there couldn't possibly be a fault with their meter as this had lifetime guarantee. I argued that "surely it must need maintaining", To which she replied the Engineers check them when they read the Meters".
"How can they possibly do this when they carry out remote readings and do not enter the property or have actual contact with the Meter?", I replied. Her response was "Our Meters never go faulty!", and was asked to carry a home leak test or have it independently checked by themselves, which there is a charge for.
I requested that the Meter be removed, as this was installed at the previous owners request, and to go on to a non-metered tariff, which incidentally, is almost half the cost they are now wanting to charge us, only to be told that you can't have it removed once it has been installed. I have checked their website and you can have it removed within 12 months of being installed, which has lapsed because this was already in situ when we moved in 13 months ago.
Any advise how to tackle this further would be appreciated?!

Only the person who had it installed can request 'removal' within 12 months.

Actually the meter isn't removed in the case above, but the occupant reverts to the old charging system based on the Rateable Value(RV). The meter stays in-situ and subsequent occupants pay on consumption by meter.

500 litres a day is about 50% higher than average consumption for two people.

If you are not using 500 litres - the most likely explanation is a leak rather than a faulty meter.
