Abbreviations

Hi all,

As a comparative newbie to MSE forums, I'd like to know if there is any information about the abbreviations that get used in posts. e.g. OH (fairly obvious that it's Other Half?)

I recently read a post which had SS and AD. :huh:

I realise that the OP (Original Poster) knows what they mean, but it's not always clear to others.

Any help appreciated.

SS = SchutzStaffel, Security Staff, Secret State, Social Security, Screen Saver, Stainless Steel, etc

AD = Anno Domini, Ante Diem, Air Defence, Accumulated Depreciation, Adopted Daughter, Acronym Dictionary, etc



So probably best to simply ask the poster involved for clarification, or at least tell us in what sense the abbreviation was used.

I guess 'SS' stands for 'Some':D (Sectret? Social? Special?) Service(s) .

"eta, she said the DA taking over a lot of this kind of stuff from SS so fingers crossed the funding stays in place; also for anyone housebound they will call and change tubes, batteries etc if needed."

Your views are made in hindsight and based on a query I asked, for which I thank you.

My apologies to you for not reading all 1148 posts to ensure thorough understanding.

It is not just that thread, but many others that I have viewed on these forums, where the meaning is not clear for the abbreviation used. Please see example in post three of this thread.

Hence my more general question initally, which was used as an example. Obviously, context does not come through that well in the written word.

As it appears my initial query can not be answered, thanks to those who were helpful. Take care.

I have provided you with an indication to the meanings of the abbreviations in which you have given a context.

Unfortunately the part of the post in which you elected to give the context of 2 abbreviations does not include one of the abbreviations you asked about in the OP.

Some abbreviations used on this site do rather require a basic knowledge of British culture and life, though.
They must be hard for a new user from overseas (for example) to get their head around.
