Wireless Router help

Hi everyone

I live in a terraced house with a converted attic which is where the main computer for our house is. We also have a laptop which mainly stays downstairs in the conservatory.

We would like to get a wireless router so we can have internet access downstairs.

Went to PC world today,who said it would be difficult to get a wireless router due to the fact that it would be located in the attic. Too far away from where we would want to use the laptop.

Is this true?

They also said the router we would need to get requires them to fit it at £70. I thought id be able to do it myself.

Anyhelp greatly appreciated.

forgive me, im usually quite good with computers but not with this wireless malarky!

Yes there is a telephone socket in the attic, from when we had dial up I think. Not in use anymore.

Regarding the location of the router, i thought it had to be plugged in to the computer with the internet connection? Does it not?

Window wise - there is a window in the attic, and directly below is the conservatory, it isnt a big house.

Could someone talk me through how the router works? What it is plugged into etc?

I know this is completely different butwe have a wifi usb thing for our nintendo ds which plugs into the computer in the attic and lets us get internet access donstairs no problem
