Is Post office card are pre-paid? You need to top up before you go?

Have you consider credit card instead of prepaid?

Prepaid seems easier I can only spend what is on the card seems quite good just wondered if there were any hidden negatives
• I used the post office card while in America - It was great, no trouble at all. Just had to top it up before i went, then still had dollars left when came home so could either cash them in or save it tip next holiday :)

Hi, we move threads if we think they’ll get more help elsewhere (please read the forum rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board. If you have any questions about this policy please email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.

I’ve moved your thread from the ‘I wanna’ board to the ‘Flights, Currency & Car Hire’ board, where it is better suited.

I got one before I went to Rome last October. I was worried that my debit or credit card might be stolen so used the PO pre-paid travel card instead.

The only time I used it was when checking in to the hotel as they needed a card before letting us have the room key and to pay the tax. The cash I'd brought was sufficient to pay for meals, tickets etc.

Getting unused money back from the card was a nuisance. You can not do this at a Post Office. Instead you have to phone customer services and ask for a refund. It took about three weeks to arrive. IIRC I then had to take the refund letter to the Post Office to get the money.

Do not close the card though because there is a £5 fee for this! Instead, I had all the money refunded (although the charges seemed high)

I doubt if I'll use the card again.
