Complaint - Is there any think i can do?

Basically it's been a very busy week for myself and my partner as we are going on holiday on the 22nd June. We have done a fair bit of clothes shopping. We popped into Asda on a couple of occasions to buy some clothes over a period of a few days.

Anyway we went into Asda today to get a refund on some clothes but we didn't have a receipt. The manageress asked when we brought the items and i had great difficulty remembering. She went away and scanned the items etc. She then told us she couldn't find items on the system and that they haven't been sold.
I then explained that i believed i purchased these items on Sunday afternoon as i used the Click and Collect and i gave her description of the checkout lady who severed us for other products.

The manageress then to be quite frank got !!!!!! and abrupt. Shes wouldn't check security camera's, called security and kept our clothes that we had brought in for a refund. An argument ensured because she is basically keeping the items because we have no proof of purchase. We went home humiliated and embarrassed to be accused of stealing really.

I turned our home over and thankfully found the receipt. I went back to the store and got a refund and she was apologetic and nothing more.

People do steal and try to return for cash refunds.

They will be aware of this. You went in with no receipt, and an uncertainty about when you bought them.

You went back, with proof of purchase, and got your refund. She said sorry. What 'more' do you actually want? I am assuming some sort of monetary gift as sorry wasn't enough. Why should they give you money for forgetting your receipt?

    She was apologetic - fantastic.

Doesn't excuse her behavior at round one! She could have checked CCTV before taking the law in to her own hands. She frankly had no proof that you had stolen them and had no proof ASDA was the legal owner of the clothes.

For all they knew you bought them second hand and trying your luck -- immoral yes, but wouldn't mean they own the clothes or have any right to confiscate them.

Fire off a letter to head office about this!

Not that money would necessarily be the answer.. but they wouldn't be giving money for forgetting the receipt - they'd be giving money for handling the situation appallingly and basically refusing to return property to ops for which she is the rightful owner which i'm sure could technically be an offence.

And yes, it would have been reasonable to check CCTV BEFORE taking the law in to their own hands.

How many days, how many hours of footage?

Unreasonable to expect them to check the cameras in my view. OP should have gone back with the appropriate paperwork in the first place and the situation would never have occurred.

If they was unwilling to check CCTV then quite simply they shouldn't have withheld ops rightful property from her.

They are not the law and their suspicions that op has stolen the garments are far from substantiated so they should not have taken the law in to their own hands without reasonable evidence.
Computer says no isn't good enough to conclude theft! Especially since their computer system clearly has flaws.

They should have done one of two things... called the police or returned the items to op.

Move on with your life, enjoy your holiday and forget about it. There will be a time in your life when some really important happens and you will realise it is a waste of your time and life to get embroiled in pointless arguments and you would of wished you had picked your battles better...

I managed to narrow the dates down from friday 13th(payday) to the 15th. Couldn't be exact as i made a couple of visits.. Eventually i remembered it was Sunday afternoon as i had an order to collect. Considering the store closes at 5pm i narrowed it down to 12- 2pm.

    Hardly hours of footage.

9/10 times i would do just that. I don't want the hassle and move on with life.

But sorry i don't like being accused of stealing which she basically did by detaining my goods in a crowded store.

I expect the manager had far better things to do than go through two hours of footage just because you forgot your receipt, especially given you were so uncertain as to when it was.

In which case she should have given him back the clothes and asked him to return when he had found the receipt.

She had NO RIGHT to take them!
