Address Discrepancy between Banks and Government

Options
Hi All,

I live in a flat whereby the Council see it as:
Flat 2,
86 [Streetname]

However, the banks and all other private companies such as insurance and utilitiy companies see it as:
86B Streetname

I quickly figured out that Flat B is the same as Flat 2, thus the Council seeing Flat 2 being the same property as the one private institutions see as 86B.

The problem I have, is on my credit record all my financial commitments come under 86B, which means according to my record, I'm not on the electoral roll.

Do I need to talk to the Government here? What can I do to resolve this?

Thanks!!! :) I've emailed the Noodle dispute address to see what they say as well.

If you chance your current address with the credit reference agency to the correct address format (that is the one the council use for your electoral roll) then that should correct your credit file and you will appear as being on the e/r.

(You may need to do this for all 3 credit reference agencies).

Then subsequently when a potential lender searches your file they will see that you are on the e/r.

    Thanks Tixy.

So I need to email Experian, Equifax and CallCredit and let them know that any searches for me should show Flat 2, 86 (rather than 86B)? I've only ever done credit checks with Experian and Noodle (Call Credit).

Also, will this certainly show all my financial accounts?

They key thing to change with the credit reference agencies is your current address. Change it to Flat 2, 86 if that is how it shows on the electoral roll.

This should then mean that any accounts that the credit ref agency reports registered with either address variant will show on your file.

Well, apparently they have the same problem. On both Experian and Noodle, they only recognise 86B and won't let me change to Flat 2...

    I'll email their dispute teams.

Surely if I submit a claim for credit like a mortgage, if I use Flat 2, 86, they'd use that address when checking and it would all show up OK, right? :) Should I not worry about this!

The solution is probably to ask the council to change the way it's reported.

I used to have problems because the council reported my address on the electoral roll as:
    Interesting House
    The Street
    The Town

(The house had a name long before the Post Office decided to allocate house numbers)

but the Post Office / Royal Mail data file showed it as:
    123 The Street
    The Town

I asked the council to change the electoral roll to:
    Interesting House
    123 The Street
    The Town

and I haven't had problems since.

Until then, the council hadn't updated the address record to reflect the fact that the PO/RM has assigned house numbers and were no longer identifying houses by name.

Thanks thenudeone - that definitely sounds like the best way of dealing with it...! I'll email Haringey council :)

You need to look how the address is stored with the post office, that is the address you should use.

What's the best way of finding that out? I'm guessing it's 86B as that the option from every drop down menu on the web including credit reports when I put in my post code :/

    http://www.postoffice.co.uk/postcode-finder - That shows 86B and not Flat 2, 86 [streetname]

    Hi All

The council have been in touch saying the address has now changed to 86B on the electoral roll but as the next electoral roll isn't published till December, that means any credit checks before then may not show me listed...

How should I handle this? I'm hoping for a mortgage within the next 4 months!

  • I find it very surprising that your council aren't publishing the Electoral Roll until December, have you asked them to check whether you have registered within the rolling registers? It seems to me that you have amended the registration well before the Annual Canvass normally starts. If your amended registration is in the Canvass, then unfortunately it wouldn't be sorted by the time you need to apply.

The thing to bear in mind is that if you have linked addresses to both 86B and Flat 2, lenders will be able to find records behind both variations, as lenders check through each linked address during a credit application.

Email the CRAs and ask them to give you a report that shows your existing electoral registration. If you wish to change any addresses on accounts that are displayed on your report, you will need to contact the lenders directly.
