Present ideas needed

It is my father in law’s partners birthday at the weekendand I wanted to get her a small gift but I am stumped for ideas.

I did ask my father in law but in a typical male fashion he didn’thave any ideas! I am not sure how oldshe is but would guess that she is in her 40’s. Has anyone any ideas that would be foolproof? Although we have known her for a couple of years I am not sure what interests she really has. Help! I know a card would probably do on it’s own but she has bought ourdaughter a few presents for birthdays/xmas so I would like to do something.

A big bunch of flowers is probably fairly foolproof, even better if you happen to know what colours she likes.

  • Does she have houseplants? Something like an orchid might be nice if she does. Otherwise is there a particular flavour or colour that you could 'theme' a little giftbag around (e.g. one of my aunts loves ginger so we got some gingerbread flavoured coffee, chocolate covered ginger and a scented candle and wrapped them all up in a nice bag). Shows you've thought about them and taken the time to find something they like but doesn't need to cost a bomb!
If you lend someone £20 and never see them again, it was probably £20 well spent...

    Same age.

On that list I like flowers, a posh bubble bath, amazon voucher, chocolates, posh biscuits, scented candle.
  • How about a magazine subscription to Ideal Home or Good Housekeeping?

A voucher for a local spa?

    Champagne.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....
  • Thinks my mum loves without being too specific: Yankee Candles, flowers, perfume, body care sets from Boots or a lightweight scarf and costume jewellery.

The majority of women like perfume, I dont know any who dont. But its an individual thing regarding which one. I'd get her a voucher for Debenhams or Boots and tell her to treat herself or for Lush or the body shop.
I wouldnt want a scented candle after one toppled over in my friends house and it burned down. The whole kitchen and living room were cinders.

Early 40s here :) and given the choice, I'd pick the Amazon voucher (love my Kindle too!) and flowers out of your list and totally pass on the rest (sorry!)

We are all different ;) For example, the combined present from the family for next Xmas and my birthday is the money for me to make a little trip to go and watch some bobsleigh world cup races next winter :D
