I'm currently working (on an experimental basis so far) on the most natural of all - plain water.

Anyone else tried this, so that the natural sebum in your hair "self-cleans"?

I've got dark blonde hair down to my waist, and I've been going 3 weeks so far...

I found this a good read for making your own hair products. Whether I'm brave enough to give it a go is another thing

Lush is good although I live in a hard water area and find it less good than when I had softer water. I now use Aveda - if you buy the 1l bottles they last forever so cut down on waste etc.

Justie, I work for Lush and they actually have a solid shampoo bar specifically for those who live in areas with hard water. It's called, wait for it............Hard! :)

Please give it a thought, the shampoo bars can give you up to 80 uses, that's the equivelant of 3 medium sized plastic bottles of shampoo!

I'm very big on being ethical and cruelty-free when it comes to cosmetics and washing, so even before working for Lush I was researching who to buy from and Lush are top of my list. Closely followed by Paul Mitchell, although they are not as natural, but definitely free from pointless animal testing.

Unless they've changed their ingredients since last year, then Original Source, whilst using essential oils to scent their products, still use chemicals too.

The other thing about Original Source and any other big brand name "natural" products is that Original Source is a brand of the PZ Cussons group. If it matters to you personally, they are still linked to conducting and/or funding animal testing which, with all the advances in more accurate forms of testing these days, is not very ethical or green for that matter!

I personally feel that if you want to go green and be ethical, you have to look at the whole picture. The money that funds animal testing is outrageous and it's not as accurate as other forms such as the use of specifically designed computer testing programmes.

Don't be fooled by claims such as "we do not conduct tests on animals for our products". Sure, they don't, but they have laboratories/companies conducting the tests on the ingredients and/or finished product on their behalf, outside of the UK. I suppose some will think it's not a nice topic to bring up, but I believe that a product that is free from animal testing is just as important as it being natural - otherwise, it's false ethics to me.

Please check out this website for more information on safe brand names. :)

Lush are good if you're after cruelty-free or ethical products but unfortunately they're not all natural. Some of their products (including the hard shampoo bar) contain SLS's, although Lush are quite good at listing the ingredients.

    Hi
I was looking for something else, but saw this thread. Please have a look at this:
    http://reactor-core.org/shampoo-scam.html

I stopped washing my hair with shampoo in October 2005 and used conditioner to wash my hair. It did wonders for my hair, but my scalp was very flaky.

I now use Dr Bronner's Magic Soaps from the health food shop. I started with the liquid soap. I dilute it with a pinch of bicarbonate of soda, and a couple of drops of Rosemary essential oil.

I use Jason hair conditioner. It is really thick, so I put about 100mls in a small jug and make it up to 300 mls with water, then I pour the whole lot into an old Herbal Essences bottle and top it up a bit further.

Both the Dr Bronner's and Jason are painfully expensive to buy. However, if you dilute them (The Dr Bronner recommends this) they work really well and work out very cheap.

Since October 2007 I have bought one Dr Bronners liquid soap and one bar of soap. They are still going strong. I am on my second bottle of Jason conditioner. There are three of us in the house and we wash our hair about twice a week.

    Regards

I use Halos & Horns on my kids hair http://www.halogb.co.uk/

I used to use Earth Friendly Kids (& Baby) http://www.naturebotts.co.uk/shop/earthfriendlykids/index.htm

Halos N Horns are far cheaper & easier to get hold of as well. I think it's about £1.75 for 200ml, certainly cheap enough to buy and have a go.

I know they're kids shampoos, but they can't be that different to adults can they??
