BTW I did do a search but I didn't know where to post.

Does anyone know where you can learn to make home made cards of a reasonable standard as a past time and where you can purchase the materials needed?

    I've been Money Tipped!
Search Youtube videos for How To's
Poundshops and The Works have loads of bits.
If you want to spend abit more or you want specialist items go to a Hobby Craft shop.
Lidl/Aldi often have Specials of crafting items.
Ebay is also a good source for supplies.

Also search the web for Crafting Forums....loads of hints and tips.

My mum is into craft, which why I know all this!!

The words were probably embossed using a machine like a cuttlebug or sizzix. They cut shapes as well as embossing. Lots of youtube videos to show how they work. You can sometimes buy embossed sheets of card from ebay, would save the expense of a machine until you're sure you'd use it.

Have a search online for card making tutorials, you'll find loads of free help out there including youtube again.

I make cards and really enjoy it but it can be expensive if you get sucked into all the new fads, and the supplies can take over your house so be wary of that before you start (speaking from experience here!) :D

I'd suggest you also browse a few card making blogs to get some ideas of what style you like. One of my personal favourites is Always with a Heart but there are loads of really good ones out there. Most of the blogs list the supplies they used so you can buy anything that you'd like to use or even make a copy of a card or two to get some experience.

    Good luck with it!
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

if you have freeview or sky then there is a craft channel called create and craft. yes it is a shopping channel (part of Ideal World), but they don't just sell you the products they show you how to use them too. lots of demonstrations per 'show'. and there is usually at least one cardmaking show each day. you can check upcoming shows on
    www.createandcraft.tv

I have learned such a lot from watching this (and although I do buy some items from them, I often get stuff in poundshops, The Works and Whats!. I avoid Hobycraft unless I cant get it elsewhere - its very expensive - although you can get workshops on cardmaking there.

If I were you I would start by buying a small kit with die cut images for you to pop out. You can make a card of reasonable standard and its a good way to find out what materials you really need. Essentials are glue:wet glue (PVA) double sided tape and double sided sticky pads, cutting knife and metal ruler, and /or scissors, thankfully all can be sourced at your local pound shop along with other bits and pieces you might like to include.

Thanks! :T I have Sky so I will look for the channel number when I get a mo - I am away tomorrow and Saturday and if I get a minute on Sunday I will look then (I am supposed to be researching and booking my holiday that day as I want to take advantage of Tescos x 5 deal). :money: :j

If you have a craft shop or shops near by they may have card making workshops- and if they don't they might know- crafters generally have their ear to the ground!! See if there are any large craft shows near you.
That's how I started- went to a couple of workshops.

I particularly like rubber stamping and punching- that way you can use the image, shape again and again- at no extra cost. Some of my expensive rubber stamps owe me nothing now since they have been used so many times!
    • I try to avoid expensive gimmicky things like a sizzix etc! You can so easily be swayed into parting with money for an item that then rarely gets used!!(I haven't yet met a crafter who hadn't done that at some time!!)
    • Borrow card making books from ther local library (and rubber stamping etc) or buy cheap 2nd hand from Amazon.
    • Sometimes you can get bargains at car boot sales when folk are getting rid of all/some of their equipment.
    • Save coloured paper from magazines, junk mail etc if you are going to punch shapes- free
Beware 'though... it can become addictive!!

    Enjoy!!!
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything! --
    Many thanks

I've been cardmaking for years now. I don't sell them just make them to send. Dawn Bibby got me hooked , when she was at QVC 'tho now she is on Create and Craft. Like previous posters I often watch C.C. I seldom buy from them but love the demos.I have succumbed to a Bigshot (die cutting machine) but I bought it second hand from a Facebook craft group. I love stamping but of late have gone down the digital route, loads of freebie images and some I buy.But be warned my "stash" started off in a plastic box and now resides in several boxes, 3 filing cabinets and several surfaces :o
