Looking back at our church fete takings for the last two summers (great weather this year, pants last year) the three top earners both years were; the raffle, Beer & Pimms, hot food (burgers and sausages on barbeque). Teas didn't do as well as the cake & produce stall. For kids (and adults, too!) you can borrow a Wii console and a TV and set up some of the sporty games - Wii bowling was very popular. In previous years we've had 'Water Or Wine' which was run by the Vicar (wrapped bottles of both hidden under tubes).

    Hi everyone,

Thanks ever so much for all of your suggestions. We have a meeting tonight so I will discuss the suggestions with the group and see what everyone thinks. Also thank you for the reminders about insurance, I presume that we are covered (using our own premises) but will check with the treasurer.

Thanks again. If you have any more ideas then please let me know.
  • A treasure map. People put stickers or flags in the map where they think the treasure is and the winner wins a prize (cash, sweets, chocs).

Fill a jar. Fill empty jam jars with sweets or toys or craft things. Pop raffle tickets on top. £1 a go every ticket a winner. Our school does this at fetes and it always sells out. Children are encouraged to bring in a jar each so 100% profit.

    Face painting

    Tombola

Get some sand put in a large tray about 2 inches deep. Half bury a selection of whole eggs and half eggshells so only top half can be seen. People pick an egg and if they get a whole one the get a prize.

If you will have lots of little ones the temporary tattoo idea always goes down well. You can buy a big pack cheaply from eBay and charge 50p per tattoo.

Sell ice creams/lollies (bought in bulk from supermarket) if nice weather.

    Good luck!

Little girls like having their nails painted. We had an assortment of glitter nail polishes and some tiny brushes that can be used for nail dots.
  • From our recent school fete:

The kids loved face painting, tattoos and nail painting stalls, we also did a kids tombola (see below)

Water to wine stall - wrap lots of empty bottles in newspaper plus a few that are full. Pay £1 and choose a bottle at random. We raised over £50 on that alone.

Contact your local Barclays - they sent us 3 members of staff to run the tombola stalls and then fund matched what we had raised (it's up to a max of £1000)

    Hi everyone,

Just thought I would thank you again for all of your help. We had some balloons and ping pong game with glass jars that was OK. We did OK this year but I think that next year will be better and I will use these suggestions. Thanks again

I second the wack a rat thing - once made it can be used year on year.

An idea I had never seen before, but has worked wonders two years running at ours is teddy abseiling off the church tower.

They set up a zip line, littlies bring their teddies and pay (I think from memory a pound) and the teddies are launched down the wire to their owners at the bottom.

Raised an unexpected fortune and lots of pictures of abseiling teddies were taken.

Absolutely love that idea! Imagine doing it with 'Barbie' (she'd be scared stiff of breaking a finger-nail) - or 'Action Man', for the boys!

You really do need to start to plan 'well in advance' - it would perhaps be a good idea to have a 'de-brief' on this years to assess 'what worked' and 'what didn't'. Try to get in an Advance Planning Meeting before Christmas and then a couple more afterwards.

Biggest tip 'Learn to delegate' and don't take too much onto your own shoulders :D.

Do you have a 'clubs/scout troop' who need to make something for their 'woodworking badges' ................. maybe they could be recruited - in the 'interest of co-operation' to construct something like the 'Whack-a-Rat!' contraption.

If you have access to a freezer - could you perhaps sell choc ices/ice lollies/frozen drinks/ice pops at a 'fair price' to give you enough of a small profit. OR see if a local Ice Cream Seller would like to 'pitch up' - at a price, of course!
