They can count notes / coins incorrectly, if for example you put a £20 in and it only registered as a £10 you can let staff know and if the machine is found to be £10 up when it's counted the store will contact you and refund your £10.

They wouldn't need to contact me. I wouldn't be leaving the store without my £10 so they'd have to count it there and then.

Today in Sainsburys I emptied a pocketfull of small change into the self-service machines before paying the rest with card. I don't know how much was there, but it was a selection of coins up to 20p.

I distinctly remember putting in two 20p coins as well as some others, and then looked at the screen to see that the machine had credited my bill with just 32p. Strange, I thought, as I'd just put the second 20p in. I pushed the "reject" button, expecting to see all my coins roll out, but instead different coins (much cleaner than mine) came out. It was 32p.

I'm not really bothered about the 20p, but I do take exception to the thought that this could be common.

Anyone else experienced this at self-service machines?

I've defnitely noticed this at Sainsbury's, thought it was just me! Am in there every couple of days cos I only buy a handful of things at once and prefer the self service tills for speed. I shove all spare change I can find into them as I figure they give a better return than coinstar ;)

The amount they've diddled me out of is probably made up for by the number of trolley pounds I've found in the car park, to be honest

I've had a similar problem with a car park ticket machine. I was pretty sure I'd put in the right money but it showed 20p short. There were no rejected coins. As I couldn't make up the shortfall with any coins I had I hit return to get my coins back so I could use a pound coin + some change. It returned 20p less than it said it had taken originally. Out of curiostity I tried the return button again and once more got 20p short.

I wonder if it is possible that some smart alec had jiggered the machine somehow to always return 20p less than what was put in - nobody would complain even if they spotted it. Whatever the expanation coin machines can certainly get it wrong.

Never happened to me at these tills.

Then again, 19 times out of 20, I would pay by debit card and would only pay cash if it was a few pence. Why are people paying for shopping that cost a lot of money, with cash? In this day and age, I thought people used debit cards.
Proud to have lost over 3 stone (45 pounds,) in the past year! :j Now a size 14!

As a small business owner, cash is king! I hate cards, I like real money.

Perhaps because, like me, they prefer to.

    Not everyone.

    I don't even have a DC.

Anyone using them should keep an eye on them if you get any offers.

I used one at Sainsbury's the other day and it asked for £3.53 (should have been £2) on the payment screen.

I pressed back and then cash again and if by magic it only wanted £2.

I bet anything if I just put £2 it would want more money

If you were a big business owner you would hate cash - you would have to employ someone to count it all at the end of the day. That's why you are always asked in a supermarket if you want a "cashback" - they want empty tills...:D

All sainsburys tills have a sign on them saying all offers will be deducted at the end. Unfortunately, people don't read signs, particularly lazy/stupid ones.
