EON - Confusion over meter readings

Hi everyone

I've just moved in to a new build which has both gas and electric supplied by EON, the property has smart meters fitted for both fuels so no meter readings required.

I took readings with the site manager on handover which were 33 for electric and 57 for gas, which I submitted when creating my online account (was unaware it was a smart meter at the time). However, my online account shows 2 readings for electricity (normal/low) and nothing for gas - it states that the source of these readings was the smart meter.

Firstly, I'm not on an economy 7 tariff so does anyone know if there should even be 2 readings?

The reason I think it's incorrect is that the day reading is 37 (taken just after I moved in so this looks correct), but the night reading is 57 - I've been using next to no electricity at night, never mind more than in the day. It looks like my gas reading may have somehow been applied as a low rate electricity reading, given that they are both 57.

I called EON and was told that everything is correct, although the CS adviser wasn't overly convincing. I'm hoping either the EON rep on here can assist or someone else on EON can confirm whether they have 2 readings even when not on Economy 7.

Thanks.

eco 7 meters usually show 3 readings. Day, Night and Total ( T ) The meters are usually set to default to show the active rate in progress, so if you view the meter between approx 8.30 am and 1..30 am at night the day read will be displayed..night rate shown as default between 1.30 and 8.30 am.. Total reading is never needed unless single rate billing has been chosen. Thats BST timings . GMT is one hour back from that 12.30 am to 7.30 am
Glad to see a "smart " eco 7 meter as so far I havent come across one in service in my area of S.Yorks and Lincs...are you sure they are "smart " meters ?

Hi JS_ and welcome to the Forums.

As sacsquacco says, our more recent Economy 7 meters usually have three readings. Day, Night and a Total. Older models, though, may only have two registers, day and night.

This type of meter is generally most effective in all electric properties, often where there are storage heaters.

Even if you've an Economy 7 meter, you don't need to be on an Economy 7 tariff. We can put you on a single rate tariff. All we do is add the day and night readings together and charge at one rate.

To benefit from E.ON's Economy 7 prices, you need to use a certain amount of electricity during the cheaper off peak night period. The actual amount will depend on the region, your usage and tariff.

Hope this helps and that you've settled in to your new home.

I think what you have got is a E7 meter but not an E7 tariff – the two registers are added together to give the total units.
And its also possible that the gas set up is not yet on the system.

When you log in on line does the home page – Your Account – bottom right hand side – Your Plans – show plans for both Gas and Electric?

It’s probably too early for you to have received your first statement. When it does come the Billing and Payments should say – Dual Fuel – and downloading a paper copy of the bill will show two lines of electricity readings (for the two registers) and also gas readings.

I think what you have got is a digital meter but almost certainly not a smart meter. The digital meter looks rather different to the old dial or cyclometer meters.

Perhaps the Eon rep could show us how to identify a smart meter?

Thanks for the replies. EON originally confirmed they were smart meters when I supplied the serial numbers - I didn't realise this until they told me.

Having spoken to EON CS again, they have now confirmed my original suspicions - it's not an E7 meter, both the electricity and gas are standard smart meters with one reading on each, the system was incorrectly applying the gas reading as a night rate for electricity. I was fairly certain that figure couldn't be a night reading because it was almost double the day reading, and I use about 1/5 of the electricity during the night as I do in the day.

I'm told this has now been corrected but it may take a day or so for the changes to update.

Just in case some readers get confused, many older Economy 7 meters(including mine) have just two readings i.e. no total!

Depending on the area, to benefit from Economy 7 prices, you need to use approx between 45 and 55 per cent of electricity during the cheaper off peak night period.
It is also pertinent to point out that the 45% to 55% figure you quote might be for E-on but certainly not for many other companies/tariffs. I am currently(sorry!)with Scottish Power and the break-even percentage is between 20% and 25%.

Yes, 2 reads only. nice old analogs, never get read wrong or transposed. All the transposed ones started with the useless digital ones, along with all the other faults these meters possess.

Mine's digital, and only has 2 readings.

Well it's actually like a magical digital display box that is attached to an old fashioned meter with a wheel turning. But even the meter has a numerical registry (that is ignored) rather than lots of clocks.

My magical, digital display box rotates the display as follows.

date - time (which is wrong) - current use registry - alternative use registry

    Hi Robin9

All our Smart Meters come with an Energy Display. This is a digital piece of kit that gives details of usage and how much this is costing.

These displays are separate from the meter and can be set up in most areas of a property.

If there's an E.ON Energy Display in operation, the meters will be Smart.

    Hope this helps.

Spot on Cardew. Sorry, should've made clear, I was talking about the more recent digital meters. As you say, there are still many older Economy 7 meters out there with just the day and night registers.

Agree, too, about the percentage usage needed to benefit from multi-rate meters. My approximation is about E.ON only.

    I'll edit to make clear.
    Thanks Cardew

Slightly off topic, but do you know if I'm able to upgrade the Ecometer SED to the Chameleon SED? or if I buy one elsewhere, whether it can simply be swapped out for the Ecometer?

    Thanks.
