Things to do in Seahouses?

Hi all,

Myself and a few friends will be going camping in Seahouses (Northumberland) next month - looking for some suggestions of things to do. So far I'd like to visit Holy Island and Bamburgh Castle but was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions?

Many thanks.

Lovely area of the country. On holiday last year we:
Took a boat trip round the Farne islands from Seahouses
Went round Alnwick Castle and gardens - did 2 days there, and the broomstick flying lessons are cool
    Holy Island
    Bamburgh castle
And a lovely day on the beach - You can park on the road side most of the way between Bamburgh and Seahouses, and then just walk across the dunes to the beach. It goes on for miles, and so much space it never seems busy. Good for stunt kites and body boarding.

  • You can take a boat trip to the Farne Islands. This is the lighthouse where Grace Darling was involved in the shipwreck rescue. You can the seals and the puffins.

If you have a car Berwick-upon-Tweed is not too far North and to the south of you is Alnwick which has a castle and one of the biggest second hand book shops in Britain.

A bit further away is Northumberland National Park and a bit further South than that is Hadrian's wall and the Roman forts.

Take some walking shoes for Lindisfarne. Outside of the main village part most of the paths are rough grass. Better to be in trainers and shoes rather than heels or flimsy sandals (just in case there are females on the holiday too). If you time things right you can come back to the mainland just before the tide comes in. Park up and then watch the tide turn Holy Island back into an island.

Try out the Copper Kettle team rooms whilst in Bamburgh. It is located in an early 1700s row of old houses and the food is lovely. It is just down the road from the castle.

It's many years since I was in that area.

Another place I remember well was Dunstanborough (?) castle.
You can't actually drive there. Have to walk along the coast, from. Craster I think.

Craster famous for its kippers, of course.

    Edit: Dunstanburgh

I loved Seahouses when I was a kid, many moons ago. I have two abiding memories.
    1. Great fish and chips from the local chippie.
    2. The rank of terraced houses my aunties and uncles lived in all had shared outside lavvies as their only form of toilet.

With luck, you'll find the the chippie is still there and that the conveniences have been updated.:)

Alnwick castle is fantastic. Don't rate Bamburgh not very good historic house.

If you do take a boat trip out to the Farnes then make sure you take a hat as the terns especially will dive bomb you or even dance on your head if you're lucky. Last summer I was waiting to get on the boat coming back and saw a bald man dressed only in t shirt and shorts get off and bound away up the path. I wonder if he got back OK!
The walk from Craster to Dunstanburgh is a dramatic highlight and is very easy - perfect if you've got kids. Inland try Cragside, the country house and estate at Rothbury, or the reservoir at Kielder which is the biggest man-made one in Europe.

I've been on a couple of their wildlife trips and they were great.

    Enjoy your trip to Northumberland.
