Flights to New York advice

Hi all,

Myself and partner had a plan to honeymoon next August (2015) with a trip to USA for two weeks. The idea to fly from UK any London (or other airport if significantly cheaper) around 11th August 2015 to New York, rent a car for the two weeks and return from New York back to UK.

Now having had a look, flights for August 2015 haven't been released yet but I can see the prices will be fairly steep, especially as its summer hols. So we need to figure out if its doable or not!

So what I really want to know is:

- Is it best to book as soon as tickets are released, I assume it'll be around August 2014 for Aug 2015?
- Are there particular sale periods each year that happen that would be worth waiting for?
- Any ideas what average prices are like if you buy tickets a year ahead to NY?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

January tends to bring sales. But sales are not always the cheapest time to buy.

Booking with the hotel (or car hire) can be cost efficient via BA, Virgin and others.

Investigating unusual alternative routes can throw up some interesting options such as Manchester to Iceland on Easyjet and then on to NYC. Indeed, a couple of days in many European cities prior to heading to NYC can pay for themselves in flight savings. Sometimes. Dublin and Berlin being examples that I've seen provide savings.

You could also look at using regional airports rather than just London and also look at less popular destinations such as Boston, Chicago, Washington or Philadelphia which are a train journey away from NYC. If you're renting a car ask yourself if NYC is really essential as a starting point.

My advice is to keep monitoring options from the UK on Skyscanner. Prices change regularly and sometimes bargains come out of nowhere.

Monitor prices for a few months. Don't dive in immediately. Be prepared to go a non-conventional route to save money. You should be able to do flights for under £600pp even in August. Shift your schedule back two weeks and the prices will drop further.

For the last 4 years, the cheapest time for me to buy my US flights was between Christmas Day & New Years Day.

I doubt August this year will be the best time to book for August 2015. Generally when very first released flight prices are relatively high.

kayak.co.uk and skyscanner.net allow you to set up email price alerts which are really good to help you track price changes.
