Not sure where else to put it - and I know that Admins will move it if I'm wrong - or one of you will know what I should be doing!
Basically, the situation is this: I've just revised my will (had a mirror will with OH) - not much has changed really, but its just something that we'd meant to do and hadnt - my FiL's naval medals are to go to DGS - the only boy in the family - but I'd like to give him some history to go with them. Like many others, FiL didn't speak much about his time during the war and before - he joined the Navy as a boy sailor at the age of 13 (back in 1921) and he was recalled to the navy in WWII, and from OH's birth certificate we know his naval number and which ship he was with at the time OH was born - but we know nothing more.
Any idea where we can look for this information so that the gift means a bit more - I'm thinking of giving them to DGS before I pop my clogs!

Just a small niggle but my two grandfathers were in the navy and I would have been pretty upset at being passed over being left their medals due to my lack of a penis.0

One set of medals, one great-grandson, six great-granddaughters. Great-grandson is also the eldest (and incidentally son of only grand-daughter). My oldest son has youngest great-granddaughter. Girls will get great-grandmothers' jewellery divvied up between them. Penis envy doesn't come into it - the three grandsons are happy with it.0

I can see where you're coming from - though to balance the situation grand-daughters may be being left specific jewellery items2014 Target;

LinYou can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset.0 -

They are! They have all made choices of some bits and the others will all be nominated. As some of them may be of more value than others, I've had them all evaluated so that each girl receives more or less the same monetary value. Of course, littlest grand-daughter - 3 1/2 years - has had hers picked out for her!0 -
Hi, 'For what its worth' I think the it is entirely up to you who you leave (give) these medals to and that isn't what the post is about anyway!
I did find some info on line about my FIL, just by putting in his name and 'desert rats' (as that was his contribution) to google.
I think there must be some more detailed military info though. Hope someone else can help.
Also I do think you are right to consider passing this on now, before the little you and OH know is lost forever!
Good luck with your search.

I gave all my grandads medals, from the first and second war to my grandsons, as it seemed the obvious place..
My granddaughter will get my jewellery, in due course!

There's a good Armed Forces board on https://www.rootschat.com - the people there will do look-ups or point you in the right direction.0

Hi Thorsoak,
I went yesterday down to the Albert Dock here in Liverpool, it's a sort of 'tall ships' weekend. I'd heard on local radio there would be people there helping you with your family tree, especially 'cos it was 100yrs since WW1. I've been trying to find out a bit more about my Grandad.
As you can imagine there were crowds and you had to queue for only 10mins on one of their computers so not marvellous but a couple of sites they gave us were ......
www.merseyside-at-war.org some interesting stories but maybe not much help unless you live in this part of the world.
Lives of world war 1 ........ That site seems to be down, i'll keep trying.
The last one may be the most helpful was the Imperial War Museam.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.
