Council snooping into bank accounts

Yesterday I had to accompany my mum to an interview under caution at the coucnil offices. To cut a long story short they had bank statements of hers going back years - my mum doesn't even have these statements! Apparently they can now not only look into you account without your consent, but no-one even informs you!…

They can look to any accounts they want, have seen them with copies going back 7 years for one enquiry, no they don't need your permission, if you claim any benefit this can be used as the reason for obtaining them. Some people think they can have thousands in the bank without DWP knowing as they've not shown them a statement or told them they have this bank account (not the one benefit is paid into), wrong.
