BT Broadband problems.

Hi Can anyone help please?
The broadband light on my router started flashing orange and I had no connection.Checked the telephone line and it was fine. After a few hours I rang BT who gave me instructions which ended up with the following.
I had to unplug my router and plug it into the main tel point where it comes into the house. It still did not work. I then had to unscrew the box and plug the router into the box inside and it now works.
But by doing this my telephone line does not work.
BT have said someone will ring on monday.
Does anyone know what the problem might be?

I take it you have it plugged in the test socket

in which case if you plug the splitter in there your hone should normally work ? is your phone currently plugged in an extension somewhere ??
if your phones plugged into the test socket then try another splitter
if it still does not work then try another phone
if you get BOTH your phone and your broadband working in the test socket then it will be any extension wiring , you can prove this by putting the front back on the BT socket and plugging everything in like before, if your router starts flashing then its either the socket front thats failed ( if you have a friend or family who live nearby you could borrow theres to prove that by plugging their front on your line ) but more likely to be any extension wiring.
if you are lucky then the extension cable has 4 pairs in it , you only need 2
you only connect the 2 central wires to 2 and 5 on the socket front (there may be a 3rd green stripped cable connected but its now redundant ) so you could swap the 2 connected wires for the 2 spares , making sure the same wire thats connected to 2 and 5 at the socket end are on the same terminals on the extension
if still failing to work then theres likely to be some sort of line problem , I've had broadband but no phone when a local cable was damaged
assume its not infinity ?Ex forum ambassador

Assuming you are using a standard BT socket then the router will be connected at the master socket with a microfilter (small white phone adaptor that has adsl written on it and two sockets -one for the phone cable and one for the router). Try changing the filter-if you don't have a spare then ASDA, Tesco, Wilkinsons etc sell them for less than three pounds. (Do NOT use a standard "splitter" but only one with adsl written on it).
With regards to the phone not working- when you have the cover off your extension sockets do not work as it is the wiring in the cover you've taken off that connects them.
So..... if you move the phone to the test socket too and plug it in via the filter both will work-and BT will be sending out an engineer to replace the faceplate . Once the faceplate is fixed your extension socket will work again and you can plug your phone back in its normal spot.
So if the phone is not already in the test socket with the router- try that first.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

No it is not infinity.
We are right at the end of the exchange and when BT put broadband in they had to do a lot of work at the pole.
What I do not understand is if there is a problem with the extension etc. why the phone was working but not the broadband.
BT did say it could be a problem with the extension but they might possibly do more tests on the line and she had referred it higher and they will ring monday.I did not know the phone line was no longer working after doing what she told me to do with the router at the time.0 -
extension wires are often low down on skirting boards etc , they get knocked and damaged. To tell you the truth with modern multi phone systems the use of extension sockets is redundant as all the extension phones connect to the line on the master phone
could also be the ADSL splitter failed on that extensionEx forum ambassador

There are no external wires.
We have the main point which is at the back of a cupboard where it comes into the house and then two sockets, one in the study and one in the hall.
The router was plugged into the study one and the phone in the hall. When the broadband light would not stop flashing I tried the phone in the study one and got a dialling tone so knew the phone line was ok.
Going out today so will have to wait and see what BT say on monday when they ring.
But at least thanks to you and duchy the phone is connected and working and I understand a little more what the problem could be.
Thank you again.0 -

BT just rang.
They told me that when it stopped working I had huge drop of speed
by 2000.
They told me to leave it in the test socket and they will ring back tomorrow and then if it has been ok, they are going to 'reset' it.
All double dutch to me but it seems it may not be an internal problem.0
