Just LOL at random internet trolls making assumptions about the way I live. Try harder please :)

Just LOL at taking jokes from people on the internet seriously. Assumptions, !!!!!!!
Blimey I'd happily live with it if that was the frequency round here, it's every few weeks and always somebody different. I'm sure there must be more than one contractor doing the same houses.

Really? I think most people here will draw their own conclusions..

Until they install smart meters everywhere they'll still have to visit: even afterwards, to be honest. You do realise that meter readers visit for more than just reads?

The house is probably filthy and the OP is embarrassed by it, hence the reluctance to have strangers in the property.
Thats the usual reason for doorstep refusals..There are over 200 different organisations who can have access to properties without the occupiers consent and meters readers are just one of them. They all need a warrant of entry(,including the police) which is expensive, and can be over £300 if a locksmith is need, so its only used for serious debtors and meter bypassers
Maybe the best option is , if you have a degree of good manners, is just to spend 35 seconds of your time and get the reading yourself. Every ones happy, no problems, have a nice day and move on. No need for histrionics.

Our meters are outside so no need to let anyone in, not that I would have a problem with that at all.

I do wish I knew when they were going to read the meter though, so I could politely ask the reader to close the the cabinet doors when they are done. They keep leaving them open and they swing in the wind which could easily damage them.

I agree, any meter reader leaving them open needs to be charged for the cost of a broken door. Its not difficult, takes 0.3 of a second. some latches are very slack and vibrate round eventually to open themselves. Replacing a broken hinge is quite expensive.
I had one last year which had a note inside, "well done muppet for opening the door, now shut it properly " I dont suggest that method though

I don't like opening the door to strangers but the meter readers are only once a quarter, i normally mark the calender when they call so know within a couple of days when they're due again. So long as they're only calling of a daytime and not after dark i can't see a problem.

If you're not allowing them access, you won't be "ticked off" the list... I think it's a sorry state of affairs that people assume that someone just out doing their job is up to no good. Why is it relevant that your wife is home alone? I can't imagine living my life with that level of anxiety.
