Guess we should stop utility companies installing smart meters then too?

No .. .. unlike most, I'm 100% for super snooper smart meters and 100% for protective surveillance cameras. I've nothing to hide and on balance both the smart meter and protective surveillance cameras are to my benefit. But this is not about me its about you, you can make an arrangement, one even with client chosen passwords. All these extra costs of course will be shared by the rest of us, but hey its your reicht to security so avail yourself of it.

As long as they have proper identification there shouldn't be an issue.

The issue is ... how does the regular Joe in the street, caught on the hop by a knock at the door, know if the ID is "proper" or not?

The same could be said for police or any other organisation.

Do you know what to look for to ensure a police warrant card is valid? I don't

Well, it's a shame some people are so scared of everyday events.

I happen to have a sign on my door bell saying 'If you don't know our name go away', which should stop the door sellers (and TV licensing, as it happens:D). But somebody with an energy company badge, hand held device and knows my name I have no issue with. It's only every two years - if that - and I'd far rather get it done and dusted. I'm a single female but don't get all precious about letting dangerous men into my house..

Blimey I'd happily live with it if that was the frequency round here, it's every few weeks and always somebody different. I'm sure there must be more than one contractor doing the same houses.

People have been having their meters read since gas & electricity were invented, what makes you special?

The house is probably filthy and the OP is embarrassed by it, hence the reluctance to have strangers in the property.

I'll be round in the morning to fit a spy camera in your bedroom, or should I make an appointment?:(

haha I like that comment, if he's so paranoid about strangers coming to his house he should stop the wheelie bin men taking away his trash every week, make an appointment and get them to come every two years to clear it away.

Some people don't want to continue living in the stone age maybe? There is absolutely no need for meter readers these days with smart meters and being able to submit online readings.
