Staying in Central London hotel with kids

Options
We are taking our 2 grandchildren to london sightseeing in august. Premier inn towerbridge is coming up at £286 for 3 nights for the 4 of us in a family room. This seems reasonable to me. Breakfast is £10 extra per day per adult children free. Is that worth buying? I tlhink it sounds ok. Are there any special offers for touristy places i could get. I dont have a lot of tesco vouchers so wont be able to use them

OP you can print off the 2for1 vouchers from the train site if you are travelling by train.

What dates are you looking to stay in London as although not a bad price for the hotel there may be better deals.

I always think the Premier Inn breakfasts are great value if you have kids with you so I would certainly go for that. There aren't many places in London where 4 of you can eat and drink for £20.

How old are your grandchildren? Is there anything in particular they want to do?

We are going 28-31 august they are aged 12 and 15 i just want to cram as much in as possible and have a great time with great memories
  • Make sure you don't miss the bridge opening if it does whilst you're there. None planned at the moment during your stay, but the schedule's always being updated: http://www.towerbridge.org.uk/TBE/EN/BridgeLiftTimes/

The Fat Tire bike tours are great (at least the Royal Parks one is, haven't tried the Thames one yet) as are some of the walking tours http://www.walks.com/

And take them to the 39 Steps, if it's still on!

I'd suggest one day you consider buying hop on hop off river roamers (on the Thames clippers) to travel up and down the river - there's a pier at the Tower so it would be a good way to see many of the sights and get up to Greenwich, the O2 and Westminster. you can get 2-4-1 tickets with the link susancs has posted.

Thanks for the ideas i am really looking forward to it. I have looked st the big bus tours hop on hop off which are about 20 per adult are there any offers anyone knows about. Groupon have one for 14.50 but its only for 4 hours!
  • I've never been on one of the London tour buses, but I have seen them stuck in traffic jams a lot! It might be worth putting the £20 each onto Oystercards, and you'd have free tube/bus travel for most or all of your stay. You can see all the sights just as well from the top of a number 9 or 11- and they get there a bit more quickly in the bus lanes. OK, you'd miss out on the commentary, but that's not necessarily a bad thing!

Oh, and p00hsticks' suggestion about the river roamers is a good one!

If you do decide to go for sightseeing buses, there's a good comparison here:

I suggested for my 12 year old's birthday that we had a day in London and he could choose to do anything he liked ..........to my surprise he wanted to do the Open Top bus tour- we had a fab day -the ticket included a river trip and most tickets are available for 24 hours so if you time it right you can use it one evening and the following day.

The tube in London in August is hot, disgusting and heaving with both Londoners and tourists (I'm a Londoner btw) and I'd avoid it -bus may take a little longer but it is more comfortable and you see more. Don't forget there's a river bus service too.

One of the things on my London bucket list is the Duck tour -I've done it in both New York and Boston and it was great fun for both adults and kids.

We've just done a theatre weekend staying at the Tower Hotel and went to see Relative Values.

One thing we did was take the DLR from Tower Gateway to Royal Victoria docks and then travel on the Emirates cable car to Greenwich. Excellent value for £7.90 return and the views are stupendous on a clear day which in our case it was.

We bought tube day travel cards for getting around.

The only disappointing thing about the whole weekend was eating at TGI Fridays by Piccadilly Circus, rubbish food and the waitress just vanished never to be seen again after bring us our food.

Oh and the number of tourists cramming everywhere!

We are planning to do it again and this time maybe take in a river cruise as people have suggested or the open top bus tour.
