Weird one- Barclaycard say my husbands dead...but he's not!

Surely barclaycard have commited a big mistake by actioning something on your husbands account from info provided by someone who has no authority to act on that account? I would be pretty p'd if someone randomly told barclaycard I had died and they closed my account....I think....0

Hi guys,
Just after a bit of advice please.
My husband has a Barclaycard, we lived with his parents until recently.
His Dad died & when they sent my husbands replacement card out my mother in law called Barclaycard & cancelled it thinking it was her late husbands card...but it wasn't.
They have the same initial & surname but not the same first name.
Barclays have now cancelled my husbands credit card!
They've had no proof that either party has passed away, no death certificate has been sent to them & they've just closed the account & are refusing to reinstate it.
Do we have any options?

How recently? Why didn't Barclaycard have your current address?

Yeah but if you did die then I am not sure if it would be reasonable for them to wait for you to inform them personally.0 -

I suppose the problem is similar to cancelling cards, and disputes on joint accounts.
The bank suddenly become liable for activity on the account because they have been 'informed' so just freeze the account. You would want to ensure no payments were made out of the account for services that the deceased is not going to use.
Given that the majority of notifications of death are honest, I imagine that the priority is trying to have a process that manages them appropriately, with the immediate actions (stopping payments etc) starting asap, then documentation later for any transfers. Although you are right, this can result in someone causing problems.
I guess this is one of those situations where the bank is liable for compensation either way, so just has to chose what is most likely. Person has deceased, or person has not.
At least a 'living' person will find it easier to sort out the mess and any issues (you would hope).0 -

When my mother died all my initial contacts were by phone and all were acted on as far as closing - or possibly freezing - accounts were concerned. It was only when there was money to be paid out that they started wanting documents and even then not all of them (utilities didn't seem bothered, nor did DWP).0
