Help after husband hospital stay

Ready meals aren't reasonable. They're expensive and no good for people who have certain dietary needs and they're generally full of processed rubbish.
OP - do you have a friend or relative who can help out?
For a short period and if you check ingredients, they'd be perfectly reasonable.0 -

I am trying hard not to be negative, but my kidney function isn't good after 16yrs, we are always warned off ready meals. I have high pottasium & have to be salt free.
Yes, Ok I get it, I work all my life with a lifelong illness, in the meantime I had several life changing illnesses & the one time I need short term help, I offered to pay, there wasn't anything to be suggested.
But you won't be on your own, your husband will be there and he needs you as much as you need him and some of the suggested changes will make both your lives so much easier in both the short and long term.
Re. meals, ready prepared salads with a suitable low salt protein source will be healthy, reasonably priced and appropriate for the time of year.0 -

Virtual sealed pot #178 £80.250 -
Most of the suggestions are fine and will not harm your health but I would probably draw the line at ready meals. Order easy to prep food online and they wont take any longer than heating a ready meal really. What about jacket potatoes, ready grated cheese and coleslaw; quiche and a bag of ready made salad or baked beans; frozen pizzas (maybe salty don't know), pasta, sauce and veg; frozen fish and oven chips etc."'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life

Thanks for all the suggestions, feeling better now I have had a good winge & even received a little sympathy.
I do already pay for a cleaner, no she can't help anymore she works for others too. I have ordered some ready prepared fresh veg, a little pricey, but hey ho! Also ordered some new potatoes, no peeling & prepared meat.
I'm going to look into the other suggestions so thank you & no I'm not going to let it get me down. We have struggled for a lifetime with my health this is not going to nake a difference. I just wished I had never asked.0 -

Once things have settled down, take a good look at how well (or not) you're managing. If you think you need extra help, try again for a face-to-face Social Services or Occupational Therapist assessment or claim benefits that will let you pay for extra help yourself.
If you've been ill for a long time, you've probably got used to "managing" and an extra bit of help would make life much easier for you both.0 -

One thing I have learned with long term health problems, is cheap as in £ is sometimes not worth it.
That's why I buy tins of chopped tomatoes with ring pull lids- best price I can find of course
and not value plum tomatoes without.
There are many things I pay more for in money terms because it saves energy of which I have precious little. And i'm fine with that because it makes my life easier.0 -
I am glad you are feeling a bit better. It is hard to adjust to changes when you usually do things a certain way but there will be a certain satisfaction in coping I think too."'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life

Hi, I really feel for you. You have health problems and have probably managed with your husband as your carer but now he is also ill and this affects him and you.
To be told you can manage on microwave meals is awful (I speak from experience). I know people manage on them quite well but when you have a lifetime of eating freshly prepared food it is a shock to the system and I'm thankful I don't need to eat them everyday.
Drying washing inside is something I'll never get used to. I've been brought up to get the washing done, hang it out, iron it then put it away and now I'm just thankful to have them hung in the house and not left sitting wet in the machine overnight (although I do still hope to get them on the line occasionally).
It can be difficult to accept that you need help and even more so when you realise the type of help isn't available as you don't quite fit the criteria.
I wasn't going to comment on this thread but I couldn't pass by without offering a little support. There are people who understand what you are feeling and I wish you good luck.0 -
Thank you for posting with support it helps, no matter what anyone says I cannot use ready meals. I don't think people understand that the having low pottasium is nothing like low sodium, things have to be especially prepared. Tasteless, but safe, last time I had high pottasium I had a heart attack because of it, It can just stop your heart this is a risk too far.
