Whenever I see a spider (no matter how small) I always get rid. My favourite method is vacuum. Leave it on for a good 20-30 seconds after sucking it up to make sure its properly dead.
Sorry to alarm you, but a vacuum is unlikely to kill a spider unless it gets chopped by the fan, depending on the type of vacuum. If it survives that, or you have a Dyson or similar, it doesn't matter how long you leave the vacuum on, it is unlikely to be harmed further.

There is some good news then.

I use this on my CCTV cameras to help stop spiders webs on the lens.

Since we moved into our new home last year, I've never SEEN so many spiders - and they all seem to originate in my bedroom.

When I pull something out of the wardrobe, invariably a spider hops off it (and not little spiders either!).

EVERY night I have to check under the duvet before I get into bed because there is usually one crawling about under there.

Twice already this week, I have woke in middle of the night with a spider running along my arm or over my neck!! Properly scares me silly, but I WON'T kill them - I have my trusty spider catcher kit (hairspray tin lid and bit of cardboard) and I release them out of the window.

It's not even an old house - it was only built 6 years ago!! But it must have been built over the world Spider HQ or something!!
I've checked every inch of the room and can find no nests but they are coming from somewhere.

Got no cats (and with 5 dogs, I'm not planning on getting one...) but I HAVE placed piles of conkers around the room because I once read they deterred spiders. Not MY spiders!

ANY advice? Do you think DEET would work at night? I'm just scared they might run over my face....... (shudder.....)

I have a plug in insect deterrent thing. I have no idea where it came from (my Mum gave it to me) but it seems to do the trick. I haven't seen a spider in the house in over a year now. Even the one that was living above the front door disappeared right after I got it. Of course it could be a coincidence, but if the problem is really bad it might be worth a try!

Thank you so much everyone for the replies and also sharing your views. I am happy to know that I am not alone with this problem, I will give the Raid spray a try this weekend, Its not that I am terrified of them, whenever I see them I have the courage to climb up to where i see them and kill them but they just keep coming back, I will try and follow your suggestions and see if that helps, about the device scottishblondie mentioned, I did get one for rats once and saw them dancing on that device as if to say "In your face mate" and got so disheartened by it that I threw it away, but may be the one you have is different from mine.

I would like to propose that you are in denial. Unless the spiders are poisonous then there was no need for you to kill any as there was no danger at all.
  • Conkers left in corners of windows etc is supposed to be very good! - also not overly intrusive, and is animal friendly, quiet etc.

You can use Chestnut spray to deter them without hurting them. I think the brand I use is called 'Spider be gone'

I'm not a fan of big spiders in my house, but if I was anything like some of the posters on this thread I'd be seriously looking at getting some therapy!

and I'd echo the comments made by someone earlier, I hope people don't show this behaviour in front of children, because its a shame to pass irrational fears on to them. My partner is really scared of wasps and she always makes a huge effort to remain calm in front of kids so that they don't pick it up.
