Vehicle Breakdown Cover

Options
Can anyone recommend a vehicle breakdown cover that also includes caravans?

Our Green Flag cover is up for renewal at a cost of £126 and I was wondering if there are cheaper/better providers out there.

I've come across GEM motoring assist, coming in at £97 ......any experiences?

Depends if you want cover that covers the caravan breaking down.

If the car breaks down a standard policy will tow the car behind within certain length and weight limits.

If you want cover for the caravan breaking down then join the CC & get the GF scheme or the CCC and get the RAC one.

Do they specifically state that they will cover the caravan breaking down? Will they take your van to the holiday site and take you home later etc?

Still not convinced it will cover the caravan breaking down.

tbh I hadn't thought of the caravan breaking down .....I was thinking more of the car breaking down and then being forced to leave the caravan at the side of the road or having to pay for it being towed.

Also I hadn't thought of the bit about taking us to the holiday site and home again either!

Yes we discussed this last week.

I phoned them on Monday and checked.

They will assist with problems with a caravan/trailer, and will recover a caravan to the UK if necessary.

It would have to be some pretty big repair for it to be not possible in most countries abroad - especially as almost all caravans have al-ko running gear.

What will they cover though? Caravan breaking down say a brake or bearing failure? They will tow it to your destination?

That would be enough assurance for most people and most situations, Its something that happens very very rarely.
But with the GF/RAC club schemes they will take you to your campsite, If its the car they will take that home or to a repair garage or arrange collection.
    Curtesy car for 48hours?
If the car cannot be repaired then they will take you home also. Even if the caravan is stored at a different location to your home.

They do cover quite a bit, But saving money would be nice also.

  • What part of a caravan can actually "break down"?
Brakes ... OK ... but they should able to fix this on the side of the road, even if it involves taking out the pads/shoes. At least you'll still be able to drag it somewhere - even if unbraked.
Bearing ... OK ... if it's seized, I get that the caravan isn't moving anywhere without a nice skid, a flat spot and probably a burst tyre.
    What else is there though?

The hitch and damper can also fail. Years ago i was on recovery and went out to a caravan where all the but one of the bolts had fallen out of the hitch.

Ive seen them with punctures that have take chunks out of the wall and floor and wheelarch hanging out.

Electrical issues also. Admittedly these are very rare but its nice to know your fully covered.

The taking us there and bringing us back and putting the van into storage is essential for us.
