Hi looking for Ford Focus alternative (seems to have shrunk with the mk3); 4-doors, petrol, still in warranty. Anything to avoid with the Hyundai I30? Thanks.

I thought the new focus was bigger than the mk2??

i30. Dynamically average, a bit cheaper than a focus, worth a bit less come resale time.

Better level of kit and a good warranty.

Thanks. To be honest I don't know much about the Focus but the current model (from 2011/12?) has a back like the Fiesta (curves down) and so -to me- the back and boot look really small.

I had an I30 on hire for a week, when my top end avensis was in for repair and didn't want to give it back. I have 2.0 d4d diesel.

The 1.4 I30 went faster, felt smoother and had more kit in it than my Avensis. I also had an I35 which I drove down to Southampton from Lancashire in and that was great too. I am sorry the I40 isn't on my lease car list, otherwise I would have had one of them.

If you need bluetooth for phone connection, check the hyundai system. On our i20 it was impossible to use as it is all voice controlled and no directory unless you entered each number manually by voice!

If you don't you need to know the number and speak the number to the system.

Actually this is right, at least according to the data in Autotrader. Seats Up boot space in the Mark 2 was 396 litres and is 316 litres in the current model. I suspect the wheelbase may be longer on the new one so the seats down space may be bigger, but perhaps not. The i30 is 378 litres so in between the two.

I'm no expert with cars but I've driven the new shape i30s and the old shape ones (both in 1.6 diesel spec) and I wasn't impressed.

The old shape is just about ok to drive and feels reasonably punchy but the new shape is awful to drive and is VERY slow to get going.

I also found that neither shape model is what I would call robust; bits fall off easily and they seem to have a lot of mechanical breakdowns.

I'd buy a Focus instead tbh.

    Hmmm.

I wouldn't buy any car with that Peugeot 1.6 diesel engine fitted, frankly. Mechanical breakdowns a common feature.

I have a Peugeot 3008 with their 1.6 diesel engine for 2.5 years, 40000 miles, no problems with mechanics at all... not sure what this comment is about.

I had a Hyundai I30 until I changed it in April. I thought the car was reliable and very well equipped for the money. It was quick enough and handled well. In my opinion it is almost as good as a Focus, but much better value for money and with a much longer warranty.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

My i30 is 4.5 years old. No bits have fallen off it (r.e. above misleading post) but some silly issues were fixed under the 5 year warranty. When test driving, take the i30 over s series of speed bumps and listen out for any suspension 'clonks'. Listen out for creaking seats when cornering.
Mine nowadays does about 43 mpg (corrected for the 6% speedo optimism factor) on a mix of commute and motorway. I reckon a diesel would only do about 15% better on fuel. The 6 speaker stereo is very good and at least has an AUX/iPhone connection.
