Will paying one month make a difference

Options
Hi, I was discharged from bankruptcy 3 years ago.
I got a credit card last month, and am yet to pay the first bill for it.
My son's birthday is in a month and I was thinking of applying for a contract phone. Will it make a difference if I apply now before I pay the first payment on the credit card or would it be beneficial to wait until the first payment is due?
Many thanks for any advice!

  • It won't make any difference, your credit report won't reflect that payment for at least a couple of months anyway.
Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

ALWAYS HAVE A DIRECT DEBIT SET UP FOR THE MINIMUM PAYMENT ON YOUR CREDIT CARDS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU PLAN TO LOGIN AND PAY EACH MONTH.

However the information you may not be looking for is that getting a contract phone for a minor is not always a wise idea, bills can esculate and you may end up where you were 3yrs ago :o

Do be cautious in buying a contract phone for your son, in terms of spend and using above the contract...

If you do go ahead with your plans to purchase your son a mobile phone contract then I would consider Tesco Mobile.

You can place a "cap" on your bills to stop massive bills being accrued and back where you were three years ago.
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.

Thank you for the advice. I am looking at a contract with calls, texts and data all in so no way to spend over the monthy bill ( hopefully!)
I don't even know what my chances are of being accepted but I'm hoping that being accepted for a credit card will help.

Youll be surprised - downloads , mobile subscription services , lost or damaged handsets with a still running contract do affect what kind of value you get from the contract...

You will get accepted with 3 mobile. I got 3 different accounts with them (phone, tablet & dongle) and I've got terrible credit

A friend of mine is in that position.

He bought his teenage daughter a smartphone, on a capped contract.

With about 7 months left to go, the phone got broken, so he's paying £14pm, for a contract that isn't being used.

Good to know. The whole family is on o2 but we're open to switching.
