I had to have a refund for an online purchase and they asked for my card details to refund my card, they also asked for the 3 digit code on the back and I said do you really need that? they insisted they couldn't put it through without it.

The day before I had another refund from a different online shop and they also asked for the card details to refund but did not ask for the 3 digit code and its been refunded the next day in my account so it obviously works without the need for me giving the cvc.

Should I be expected to give the cvc code if I have to have a refund back to my card? I don't pay over the phone because I don't want to give the cvc yet I end up have to give it to the operator for a refund.

In the past many times if I've had a card refund from an online purchase they don't even need to speak to me on the phone they just refund automatically why is there such a difference between companies?
Thanx

I guess all terminals are different, but MY terminal DOES NOT require that I take the CVC code to process a refund - only the
16 digit number and the expiry date.
The terminal then asks for MY merchant code - perhaps that's where the staff member is getting confused?

I don't know, they never said merchant code they just said the last 3 digits on the back of card so it was definitely the cvc they wanted. I'm not happy about it.

They did ask for the name on card, the long card number, start date, expiry date and the cvc

  • The online company are probably not using a physical terminal that you see in a shop, they are likely using a 'virtual terminal. An online web portal that allows they to take payments and the funds to be directed.

Because its online CVC is important because it proves you are in possession of the card, I’m not overly surprised that this information has been requested and wouldn’t be too worried.
    If it helped, say thanks...

Why are you moaning about it, you gave the CVC to pay for your goods, what difference is it giving it to them for a refund?

I wouldn't say I am moaning about it just concerned and checking if this is the usual way or if I could refuse to give that info if asked in the future, especially as I was refunded the day before also from an online purchase who did not require the information. What is wrong in me questioning that

The difference is paying online securely is not the same as giving your full card details to someone over the phone, its not unheard of for some people to abuse that information

Sounds like the card company don't need it to be able to process the refund.
But sounds like the person you were speaking to did need it to put the details on their system.

Maybe you could have got away without giving it by speaking to a manager to be able to bypass the system the person you were speaking to. But quite possibly there'd be no-one there with the authority to do that. Quite possibly you'd be waiting for a call back. [And, quite possibly, without knowing the company involved, you'd still be waiting!]

I have often renewed my insurance, for example, over the phone using my debit card, and each time the three digit number has been required, and I have had no issues. As long as the company is reputable, you should be ok
