All that, along with some flexibility on fares for long journeys or hitting traffic
I know the fares are set by TFL, but I'm curious whether they are allowed to give a discount? I kmnow it sounds like a silly question but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a daft policy somewhere.0 -
They can give discounts. Lots nowadays do if the traffic is bad or if they really want the job or even just to make it fairer and more competetive for passengers. There are still many though who will charge what the meter says and nothing else. These are the ones who wont go to certain places or will pull up to the back of a queue of traffic and get their newspaper out rather than trying to find another route. And its these ones who give the whole trade a bad image.0

The funniest take on this subject I have ever come across was in Viz comic, when Cockney W@nk3r was doing the Knowledge. He passed that by describing how to get from Big Ben to Victoria Station via Barnet.
He was then told that having done the Knowledge, he now had to master the Ignorance. The question he was asked, to show his Ignorance, was what’s the shortest way to get from “wanderful wevva we’re ‘avin’” to “send ‘em all back”.
The right answer, IIRC, was “wanderful wevva we’re ‘avin’ - I seen the cricket got rained off again - all them Pakistanis comin’ over ‘ere - send ‘em all back.”0
