Hidden costs of Sun £15 holidays! Are you struggling too?

Having booked my first sun holiday by collecting the tokens, I am now horrified at some of the additional costs involved.

There is the £15 'insurance' cost, which although I did not ask for insurance is part of the outstanding balance, this replaces the need for a £100 deposit to be taken on arrival at the site. I'd rather pay the £100 deposit and then get it back when I leave, rather than pay Sun Holidays £15 for doing absolutely nothing.

I have also tried to call them for over a week, calling at different times of day, outside of the normal working lunch hour, to pay the linen hire charge, discuss this £15 insurance and other fees which they are asking for.

The phone lines are always busy and at 5p per minute from a landline, I cannot keep calling and using my mobile when at work.

I've emailed them asking for them to call me back but received a system generated email asking me to call them on the 0844 number provided!!!!! Frustration or what!!

This cheap £15 get away is starting to cost a damn sight more.

is anyone else having problems?

Thanks

For the most part the Sun holidays have never been just the £9.50 or £15. That is simply the initial booking fee. There are plenty of threads on this site that would have told you this if you had looked before making your booking instead of after.

Only those holidays that are advertised as "just pay £9.50 / £15" are £9.50 or £15 per person with a minimum fee to be paid for 4 people. However, these are generally UK parks not the European ones.

The additional costs are payable to the holiday park and not to The Sun. It is only the initial booking amount that is payable to The Sun. The additional costs are set out on the Sun's website and in the holiday brochure. You will see that these additional costs are for things such as the daily service fee (which is payable for both the national and European parks), entertainment passes, linen and sometimes even a fee for utilities. And some countries charge a daily tourist fee per person, which is payable when you arrive at your destination park. The Dutch parks also have a tax of 25 cents per 500ml on bottled water ....

You are obviously going to a European park, as it is only the European parks that charge the £15 damage waiver insurance. It is not compulsory to pay it. You can pay the £100 deposit when you get to the park instead. You don't have to pay the linen charge either. However, unlike the UK parks, most European parks only supply pillows and thin blankets. If you also want duvets, duvet covers and pillow slips you will need to pay the linen charge unless you take your own.

You do, however, have to pay the daily service charge. And will also need to pay for transport to get to the park you are going to.

As regards payment of the remaining balance, there is no point in trying to call The Sun. You need to call the holiday company who are dealing with your booking - most likely Eurocamp. I've never had any problem getting through to them, and have found them to be most helpful. The contact details for Eurocamp are:

contact us on enquiries@eurocamp.com or by phone on 0844 4060406

And to be fair, even after all the extras are added, you are still getting a very very cheap holiday to Europe courtesy of The Sun. If you think you are being ripped off, check what it would have cost you if you had booked direct instead.

They all whack on extra fees, every one of them. Every sun holiday I have been on will charge extra, but they all label it differently, it might be linen costs, electricity, club passes, but it will be there. You can opt out of most though - linen and club passes etc- but have to do this directly through the park.

I havent heard of an insurance cost as yet, though
The opposite of what you know...is also true

There are no hidden costs. They are are all clearly listed in the booklet or online.
The £15 damage waiver is standard for all European holidays and is non refundable.
It is not obligatory, though. If you eject not to pay it then a refundable deposit of £100 is payable at the site when you check in, though we have never been asked to pay it!
