Flight cancellation

On 31st March Lufthansa announced a Pilot's Strike. Three of us were due to fly with them from Manchester to Boston on 4th April, starting a holiday to USA and Canada. By the time I got to speak to the airline the best they could offer were flights the following week that would have meant arriving in Boston AFTER we were due to flight out on the next leg of the holiday. Lufthansa agreed to cancel the flights we couldn't take and refund us that part of the whole flight plan. Ten weeks later I have received an email offering us each a reasonable sum of money...but a time scale of another 6-8 weeks before receiving the refund.
We had to book alternative flights to start the holiday and they cost £598 each. I had to use a card to pay for them and then take money out of savings to pay the card off. That money was ear-marked to pay off the costs of the holiday upon our return for hotels that were booked/deposits paid prior to leaving.
Travel Insurances will pay the difference between the 'new' flights and the refund. One for my wife and I and one for my mother-in-law. They will, of course, have an excess to be deducted.
My long-winded enquiry is about trying to get Lufthansa to at least pay for the excess, if not a little more in compensation to cover additional costs. They have 'offered' us 50 Euros each but only to use in their on-line shop, with no cash alternative.. I have not yet replied to their email, received yesterday.

You'll have to ask Lufthansa, nobody in here can do anything about it. I wouldn't hold my breath though, anything they offer over and above a refund will be a goodwill gesture.0
