PrePay Meter Bill After Leaving Scottish Power

Hi All.

Been with Scottish Power on a pre pay meter for about 4 years. Didn't change it to a credit meter as I wasn't planning to stay and it's a rented flat. However things changed and so I changed to British Gas to get the meter changed to a credit meter for free.

About a month after leaving Scottish Power I got a bill for £86.79. All letters previously stated I was in credit, although not sure how.

My question is, how can I owe them money when it's a pre pay meter and they've never asked for money before. They've also never asked for a meter reading and anyway, the meter is in a communal area.

Thank you in advance.
