What does this question mean.......

If a monthly payment fails and cover seizes is this a 'cancelled policy' or just them deciding not to continue offering the service?

    In that scenario the policy has been cancelled by the insurer.

    They "decide not to offer the service" in scenarios where they pull out of a market (eg. No longer will do pet insurance) forcing policyholders to move elsewhere.

    Surely if you don't pay the premium then it could equally be argued that you have cancelled the insurance yourself?

    er, no.

    The policyholder will have breached the contract terms by defaulting on the payment. The insurer will have cancelled the insurance.

    Exactly my point - you have initiated the cancellation.
    Cancelling your payment for a service is making the point - "I don't want it any more". Like walking out of a job - it's resignation, not being sacked.

    To initiate a cancellation you follow the procedure for cancellation set out in the contract, ie give them notice that you wish to cancel, pay the cancellation fee (if applicable) and only then cancel the direct debit. Just not paying is not equivalent to cancelling.

    Similarly if you just stop turning up at work that's not the same as resigning - it means you'll be sacked for gross misconduct eventually.

    But the op was asking about a "failed" payment not a cancelled one.

    Not with a motor insurance policy!


    By cancelling payment you don't cancel the policy.


    (Everyone reading your posts should ignore your dangerous "point" and read up in their policy how to cancel if they want to)
  • A few years ago I decided to go with auto-renewal (it was the cheapest) but it failed due to the card details they had on file being out of date. Stupid really because obviously they knew the expiry date and could tell at the time they sent the renewal offer that they needed a new card to take payment from.

    Anyway, I was on holiday at the time so didn't get the letter until about a month later when I got home. Called them up and sorted out payment, re-started the policy. No cancellation black mark, no issues. If they had argued it I would have complained and pointed out that they failed to use the contact details I provided to them (email).
